I've been rocking' the Maz 18 for a few months now, and even though the controls seem straight forward I'm amazed at how subtle changes in any one parameter affect the overall tone. The most baffling to me is the interaction between the volume and master volume. If I want some "hair" to a lead country tone on a telecaster I'll put the volume @ 3 o'clock and the master at 9o'clock & get some clean(ish) tones with overdrive depending on how hard I attack the strings. Now, if I do the opposite by setting the volume at 9 o'clock& master at 3 o'clock I get a nearly identical tone but a cleaner bottom end (if that makes sense). Now , if I set both volume & master at noon, I get almost the same tones as before with mabye some subtle differences in treble response. So, I'm kind of wondering what most others here set the volume & master volume at when using the MAZ when gigging with pedals?

I like to get the Master up to noon or above, if possible. For pedals, I usually keep volume below noon -- where depends on the guitar -- and use the Lo input jack.
Think of Volume as controlling the preamp and Master as a volume control for the power tubes. With the two knobs you're setting how much drive/overdrive comes from pushing the preamp and how much comes from cranking the EL84s.
In addition, the eq is purely passive. With treble, middle and bass all the way up, you're getting "full signal" through the preamp, subject to where you set the volume control. As you turn down any of the tone controls, you're subtracting signal strength within a band of frequencies. For example, for an "old school" vibe, set TMB all to the max, turn volume all the way down, put master at the max. Plug in, bring up volume and you'll hear changes as the power tubes become part of the OD equation. Use Cut to adjust tonal balance. It will be LOUD, though.

I've only had mine a few months as well. Right now I put Vol 2-3, MV 10-12. Gives a little grit & then pedals push it more. I recently starting switching between hi & lo inputs too.
