Hey, everyone! It's been quite a while since I've been on here, but I couldn't think of a better place to come with my question! Anyways, here it is: The other day I came across a Fender Deluxe extension cab that has the same color scheme as my maz and matching 2x12. Though in the flight cases the cab is too much for me to deal with all the time. This was a cheaper option than getting another small combo amp for practices, etc. Plus, I still get to use the Z! Anyways, it comes with the Celestion G12p 80 I believe, and I played through it for a while, and was pretty happy with the sound. I know this isn't necessarily a great speaker, but it seemed to do the job. However, I had a friend that's taking a look at a broken pedal for me offer a basically new English G12-h 30 speaker for around $90. I'm wondering if it's worth the money to upgrade it with such, or if anyone has any experience with a maz through juts a g12? My 2x12 has a g12h and a creamback in it and it sounds amazing... So based on that I'd like to say I should go for it. But money is hard to spend at the moment. Is this a deal I should let slip by? Thanks in advance!

I had that same cab..while I can't speak specific to the MAZ, since I don't have one, I can say that particular speaker felt more top heavy to me than a G12H...which seems heavy top and bottom. I do believe you could get a more fulfilling speaker for that amp...and cheaper new from WGS Speakers than a used Celestion often.

I believe that speaker is a celestion 70/80. Switching to a G12H is not an 'upgrade'. They just do different things. One is not necessarily 'better' than another...unless your ears tell you so.
From what I remember, the 70/80 is supposed to be a neutral sounding speaker. That's why you see them in a lot of modeling amps.
I've had two Maz Jr's. And I don't like the G12H with it. But for the most part, I don't like the G12H speaker at all. As Simpleton says, it's heavy top and bottom. It's got a big 50 oz. magnet...that makes for firm (and loud) bass. And the speaker has crispy highs. The result is recessed mids. And mids are where it's at for guitar.
The G12H can be really cool if you're playing alone. But when you play in a band, I think it gets lost in the mix. I would be very weary of getting rid of that 70/80 for a G12H. As for your 2x12..I bet the mids of the creamback help offset the recessed mids of the G12H...while you get to enjoy the highs and lows of the G12H. (And when I say creamback, I mean creamback "M"...the high powered greenback...not the "H" version.)

Thank you both for your responses! I've decided against buying the G12h. I put it in the cab (He let me borrow it to try it out) And it just doesn't do anything too much better than the 70/80 (yeah, that's what's in it. Just a less fancy labeled one, I guess) Though from this whole experience, I did learn how to swap speakers, and I'm excited about that! I'll probably look into getting a different speaker at some point.
John, what kind of speakers did you like with your Maz's?

My favorite speaker is the Greenback. Not for just the Maz, but for many amps. Many people like the Gold or Blue. I used my old maz with a blue for a while, and I'll admit, it's very nice. But blues/golds are very expensive speakers, and I'm kind of a ceramic guy.

My Greenback experience would be opposite John's...I've enjoyed G12h copies from WGS ...I like Eminence more than Celestion. I think what I'm saying is that trying speakers is like everything else...you'll try some you like and some you don't ...some more and some less...some grow on you and show you things and some tease you like a temptress.
Have fun when you start up...

Had three wgs speakers...had the reaper hp/g12h that was a mike Tyson son of gun... and the et 65/still own and plan to use and the g12c/orange basket which was way to dark...I on the other hand love the g12h anniversary with maz...like simpleton say's...different strokes.

I say no matter what speaker... if it works for you, stick with it! I'll admit that I'm more of an alnico guy but John is right that the Greenback is an amazing speaker and it's growing on me daily. Everyone hears something differently and if a specific tone works for you, that's all you need.

I think the WGS Reaper hp goes with just about all speakers. I have one and it sounds good mixed with all the speakers I have tried and it is not expensive. It sounds good by itself to. It's worth a try for the money.
