Weird, he usually does say that. If you got the cash man, you should try the GEC. I really liked that one too. Definitely a more beefy or strong sound. Might be nice to have a good EF86 like the GEC just in case. They are a really strong tube. I have heard that even the Darios can go south sometimes. I definitely love the Dario and I can see why the Doc loves them too. They have the most balance between that wonderful 3-D sparkle and that stronger more defined sound. That is why I think the Dario is in between the Mullard and the GEC. I found my Mullard has a ton of sparkle but can be a little 'soft' while the GEC has a very muscular sound but the least amount of sparkle. The Dario is definitely a good compromise between the two. One thing I should mention which I think is a little weird. I found the Mullard EF86 became less 'soft' when I put in the Mullard 5AR4. It became more like the Dario but with more depth. Does this qualify me as a 'cork sniffer'. One thing that I like in the Maz and miss with the ray is some of the hard attack & agressiveness for rock & blues. Do you think that gec will give me some of that in the ray? Steve

I have to say that I think the Ray is more of a single coil amp...and that the MAZ can handle my LP better... Just my take....not that the Ray cannot handle the LP, it can but I think the MAZ can deliver a more centered and aggressive sound...more of a classic LP sound than the Ray....one not "better" than the other, just different.....like women....

Do you think that gec will give me some of that in the ray? Steve I think the GEC will beef up the Stingray for sure. To my ears it changed the amp quite a bit compared the Dario or Mullard. Defintely less sparkle but it had more beef. Just more of everything. It even seemed a bit louder or more aggressive. Again these are the only ways I can describe the changes in sound you might not agree with me. I was looking for more of a sparkley kind of tone rather than a more beefy one so I went with the Mullard or Dario. If I was to play more aggressive stuff I might pop in the GEC. It might give you back some of the aggressiveness you are missing with the Maz. These are also my experiences with these three particular tubes. I am not sure if all the GEC ef86s sound like this one so YMMV. I hope this helps.

I've got number 9. A blonde 212 combo. I actually got it back in February (I think). It sits onstage next to Jason's 2 Stingray heads. He's always showing me up. (in amps and playing)

(in amps and playing) let me tell ya guy's and I wish Shannon would play that Stingray all the time... but 2 guitarist's both running Stingray's sounds REALLY cool... And just for the record, I DON'T show shannon up with gear cause he MORE than holds his own... AND I don't show him up playing-wise at all either as he is a mighty fine picker AND also pulls double duty as he does the singing as well... and purty good at that too... I'll make you a deal Shannon... If you play your deluxe from now on ( or just get you a maz 18 jr... you know you want one!!) Then I'll just play my Ghia and we'll have alot less equipment to haul around from now on? ;D ;D ;D and the Stingrays can come out for the outdoor gigs.... how bout it?? I didn't think so.... but it was worth a try, Jason

You wouldn't know what to do with only one amp on stage. I do want a Maz, but I couldn't do that to you. All of the joy you get with figuring which combination of Z's would sound best at each show? I couldn't take that away from you.
Have I mentioned that Jason taught me how to play?

OK sorry for Hijacking this thread but I gotta respond to Shannon's re-reply... You wouldn't know what to do with only one amp on stage. I do want a Maz, but I couldn't do that to you. All of the joy you get with figuring which combination of Z's would sound best at each show? I couldn't take that away from you. I DARE you to get a MAZ JR! ;D and " which Dr Z to use?" ... even if I just used the Ghia; I'd still get enough joy out of figuring out which speakers to use/ bring with it! so thats not a problem... Have I mentioned that Jason taught me how to play? OK, that is below the belt... lets not start that on this forum... Shannon has for as long as I can remember told folks that I taught him how to play and was responsible for basically molding his guitar playing future ( ruining his life or turning him to the Darkside, whatever) by turning him onto blues music, showing him a few chords, etc and so forth… Anyway, he would announce this every chance he got, EVERY time we played how much he owed me… He would do stuff like call out my name and announce “ Jason Gleaton Ladies and Gentleman” right before a solo… So of course everyone would stare at me waiting for Jimi to come down from the heavens or something and I would usually then proceed to butcher whatever it was I was trying to play... having absolutely no chance of playing anything remotely "on" after being introduced like that... Thanks Shannon... and I finally just about get him to stop doing stuff like this and now he brings it up here… he even just had a big write up in the local paper and was supposed to be HIS profile cause he plays music but he also runs a BBQ restaurant, very cool and interesting life… and my names mentioned so much in this article I thought it was MY profile or something… he says he just mentioned me once and that the writer must have just used her artistic license.... yea right I kinda try to fly below the radar because of my job and not that I’m not grateful for his appreciation, I am but… The truth is he had it in him to play and I just pointed him in the right direction ( or wrong depending on ones perspective) … so…. I’m calling your bluff… you DO owe me buddy. Bigtime… So give me your Stingray. ;D Oh and then buy and start using a MAZ JR and we’ll call it even… Jason btw I'm just kidding with him, he's great and I don't want to SING so I'm NOT gonna make him mad... and I'll shut up now. .......................................................................and if this had been an actual emergency you would have been instructed where to tune for news and official information... ;D

I'd like to end my responces by saying Jason is one of the most modest players I know. He did get change my life by getting me to listen to Muddy and Freddie. He also made me listen to how I sounded and turned me into a tone freek. If I'd have had someone guiding me that just played guitar to impress people instead of playing for the love of the music, I might be in one of those "Wonderful Tonight"-"Brown Eyed Girl" cover bands. I do owe Jason (maybe not the Stingray). He's always the first person I consult anytime gear questions come up. And he's the only other guitar player I've ever been able to play with productively. He always says he just pointed me in the right direction like it isn't a big deal. If you are stranded in the ocean, someone to point you in the right direction is a pretty big deal. Thanks. Shannon
And did I mention Jason taught me how to play?

Is your #24 blonde a Blonde with a Black panel like my #6? Just curious I haven't seen another Stingray head in the Blonde n Black? I know there's gotta be some more out there but I just haven't seen them...

I almost swapped my Stingray into all my all red MAZ 38 head when I had them both, but I didn't because I started thinking it might be some kind of "Z" sacrilege, or genetic tampering. ;D Oh well!
