Hello, my name is Keith, and I recently purchased several pieces of Dr. Z amps and cabs. I proudly own a Maz 38 Rev, a Maz 18 Rev, and a Carmen Ghia. I also own a Z Best cab and a Z 1x12 that matches the Maz 38. I'm in tonal bliss and am truly enjoying getting familiar with playing and stretching my guitar abilities with these wonderful pieces of equipment. I'm a bit over amped at the moment and may not be able to keep all of these great amps, but I'm leaning toward keeping the Maz 18 and the Carmen Ghia. I'm even considering send the Maz 18 back to the Dr. to have the tone bypass and effects loop installed. If anyone would like to comment on their experience getting these mods done, I would really appreciate it.
thanks, Keith Shannon

it begs the question, 'How do you end up with a 38,18 and a Ghia and a harem of cabs?
Did you trade a boat?

Keep all of them! The 38 and 18 do have some differences that make them both very desirable. Like most of us you might want to be planning your next Z Buy rather than selling one of the herd. I started with a Maz 38 2x12, then added a Maz 18 NR 1x12, then an EZG 50, then an Antidote and a couple cabs and Z-Verb. I sold my Stingray (not Stangray) 2x12 combo which I deeply regret so I vowed never to let them go. Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do but try to keep them if you can.

The only bad thing (for you wallet anyway) about owning Z amps is you want more. I guess you have figured that out. I had a MAZ Sr. and sold it to get a Jr. I don't miss the Sr. at all but I have a JAZ that sort of covers that power range. I've never had any use for the tone bypass. Most players don't use the effects loop either and run their effects before the input.

You guys are definitely correct. Unfortunately, I made a deal with my sweetie that I would economize if she let me dive into the deep end of the pool. I tried every imaginable combination and at the end of it all, I'm just not up for carrying 2x12 cabinets anywhere, so I purchased a beautiful Mather convertible in red tolex and salt and pepper grill to match the Maz 18. I put a Weber clone of a Celestion Gold in it and WOW, tonal BLISS is an understatement. I totally got the Ghia and loved it, but I sold it as a set with the Z Best to someone who really really wanted it, and it was his first Z gear, so I sort of felt good about it. The Maz 38 absolutely is similar but very different than the 18, and I loved it, but wow, too much power. I responded to a WTB ad where a guy was looking for exactly what I had, so I pitched it and he happily bought. So, I'm down to the Maz 18 and matching Mather, but I'm expecting to purchase a Remedy head today, a newer one with the master volume and tone bypass. Pretty excited about that and satisfied that it will be something very different than the Maz 18. The half power switch means I will be pumping the same basic wattage as the Maz, which is way more than enough, but I can at least get into the power section sweating a bit before the windows start rattling. Any suggestions on the best speaker and 1x12 combination for the Remedy?

Any suggestions on the best speaker and 1x12 combination for the Remedy? Anything in the greenback camp. (meaning greenbacks or clones...WGS, Weber) The greenback tone is made for the Remedy. Might I suggest the Creamback M. Higher wattage and lower efficiency. (so you can crank the amp more) And if you're more into a metal tone: A V30.

Any suggestions on the best speaker and 1x12 combination for the Remedy? Glad you made it back. The story is not as good as we were hoping but at least no one died. I recently dove into the deep end as well. I disguised it as electronics projects, but somehow I hatched amplifiers. It was getting bad, I have a couple of attenuators, speakers, speaker cabinets, grill cloth, and transformers in stock. My only Dr. Z is the Maz 18, after building a few amps I am blown away by the quality and especially the price of Z amp. Your story is actually pretty good, nice to see you be a good consumer of fun selfish products. Somewhere in that mix you should try the Alnico cream. You definately need a valance by Harvey bv

Welcome to Z world.
I did have the eq bypass retrofitted to an older model MAZ 18 Jr, but I skipped the effects loop. I like the bypass, but it creates a dramatic volume jump. That makes it somewhat challenging to use as a solo boost, although you can use it for that if you're willing to also adjust the guitar's volume knob. That said, I quite like to run the amp with the bypass engaged and use the available controls (volume, master, cut) and choice of input jack to get tone.

Fwiw, I have an FX loop on my 2013 MAZ and I only use it in the studio... too much hassle to run back and forth four cables and a buffer + power supply during 15 minute festival change overs.
