i'm planning on ordering a stingray soon, and i know the Dr. doesn't offer oxblood anymore. i have a blonde/oxblood Zbest and i want to try and match the 'ray with the cab. if i order some oxblood grillcloth from Mojo music supply, do you think i'd be able to re-grillcloth the front panel?
i saw Madison's work with his cab and it came out great! just wondering if i'd be able to take that panel off and apply grillcloth instead of having a tolex front.

Teleking36, could do it but I'd get somebody else locally who really knows what their doing to do it for you, unless you've done it before... I Don't think the Doc 'll do it for you if you send him the material though... You could still ask him, but I tried that with the wheat grille for my RX ES... don't think Doc likes to put something on there he doesn't know the quality of or how it's gonna hold up.... I don't blame him about that really cause it's his name on the amp and his reputation... But I know you could do it yourself or have it done... thought about doing that to my OLD rx head...may still do it...Black and wheat would look cool... I have the stingray blonde/ black tolex head on the blonde/ black tolex and oxblood cab in the avatar... wouldn't look bad with a straight ALL blond tolex head cab... then you could always put oxblood on it later if you still wanted too... but, that blonde head w/ oxblood cloth would look COOL though!!! thanks for the input jason!
i actually LOVE the look of your Stingray, with the Blonde tolex and black tolex front panel. I wonder if i could get away with just keeping it that way, or if it would look kinda weird with my blonde/oxblood cab.
do you have a jpeg you could send me of your 'ray head/cab so i can get a better idea of what it looks like?

teleking, jason makes a good point about letting someone with experience do your tolex...But, if you decide to do it, what better way to start than by just doing the front panel? The tricky part will be getting the piping correct. On my cabinet project the piping would never pass the Z inspection! ;D

i saw Madison's work with his cab and it came out great! just wondering if i'd be able to take that panel off and apply grillcloth instead of having a tolex front. teleking... You can do it from scratch....I think someone in the carmen ghia board did it to his ghia (replaced the front panel and did it up with green tolex)...here's what I would do. I would cut out a new front panel and just save the stock one your stingray comes with, just in case you want to revert to stock. This way, if you screw up the front panel, you're not out one official Z front panel. I'm making assumptions here, since I don't know the construction of the Doc's stingray heads (so please, Doc included, go easy on me)...but I suspect you would need to remove mounting screws that hold in front panel from inside the amp. You will definitely need to remove the tubes (dont try to unscrew stuff with them in there, as your hand might slip and poof, goodbye glass) and you may or may not need to remove the actual amp chassis (depending on how small your hands and screwdriver is)... Then, simply take notes of the dimensions of the front panel (thickness of wood, width height, and notched or cutout portions). Go to Lowes and grab a 2X2 piece of birch ply (about 11 bucks) in the thickness you need... with the 2X2 piece, you'll have enough wood for at least 2 tries to get it right. Once you cut the piece the way you want (allowing some room for piping and grill cloth) dry fit it back into the head to test. ** keep in mind, I'm assuming you have access to a table saw, jig saw or some other variety of saw that'll let you get the job done. Then, simply paint the wood black (most fender style grill cloth is designed to look the way it is when on a black baffle board), attach the grill cloth and piping (w/ staple gun) and put it on your stingray head. Now, there's a bit of art and technique to getting a grill cloth on a board....but again, since you're not changing the original board, you can make some mistakes and get it right without worries. Most grill cloth is sold in yard X yard sections, so again, you'll have enough to learn from....and I think you can probably get oxblood fender grill cloth from marshallparts.com (look under fender amp parts) for about 15 bucks per yard. The good news is that applying a grill cloth on a wood board that's 4-6 inches high by 17 or so inches wide is ALOT easier than trying to put it on a speaker baffle board thats alot bigger. Hope that helps.... Go very slow and methodically and you should be fine...

evildoc,
thanks for the advice. i would definitely take on the project myself, granted i had the right tools for the job. unfortunately i don't have a table saw or jigsaw.
i wonder if Doc would/could sell me a blank front panel???
i'd probably be better off keeping the integrity of the original front panel in case i want to switch back without any problems, like you said.
in any event, i'll probably order a blonde/black tolex 'ray and, who knows, i might just keep it the way it is.
thanks for the input guys.

I think you can order the grill cloth and tolex from Mojo Musical Supply. I just built a 2x10 cabinet. I took my time and it turned out great. My next project may be a cabinet with 2-10's and 2-12's.
There is a article over on The Gear Page that basically takes you step by step on replacing tolex. If you type tolex in the search you should be able to find it. Mine turned out so good I didn't even need to use corner protectors to cover up a mistake. Make sure you have enough materials before you start.
