Well I gues it must be official, the good DR.'s website no longer has the "Stingray". Replaced by the "Mantaray".
Those greedy buggers. I still don't understand why they would get upset over a name on a bass being used on an amp. It was used on a car well before then and I'm sure its been used in a lot of other products. Oh well, breathe in, breathe out, count back from 10, 9, 8,....
On the brighter side does this mean there might be a "Man Jr." in the near future?

What's the story? Who made Dr.Z change the name? Why?

Check out the earlier thread on the name change. Apparently Music Man Corp. owns the rights to the name (I'm pretty sure they have a bass guitar named the stingray). You know how it goes, d@mn lawyers and such -Greg

Well, from what I hear about the world of "ray's"; the Manta is the mother of all rays in the ocean. So, in the food chain, it's better to be a Mantaray than a Stingray!

Actually I think " 'Ray " would have been cool. I'll bet down the road that's the nickname it'll have anyway.

Good point Jason, I think the good DR. might be intimidating some companies right now in the boutiqueish market by offering a quality product around half the price of the competition.
I won't name names, but some companies are charging over $2500.00US for a handwired ptp amp built with quality parts, most of these are clones of some flavor. To build some original designs of the same quality that may have simialr flavors (but not clones) and sell them to the masses for under $2500.00US they should change his name from Dr. Z to St.Z for not sucumming to the greedy vortex the other's have fallen into.
Don't get me wrong, most of those clones sound phenomanal I just think the price is a bit steep.
Just my opinion.

No matter what the name is, the amp sounds great! Any idea how many Mantaray's were made? I know there were 50 Stingrays made? Is that correct?

I think a few/several of the Stingray's, got ruined in the big Nashville flood a few years ago.....didnt' they? I remember reading that it's down to the upper 30's or lower 40's now for original Stingrays?? I could be wrong, or the good Dr. could have saved several of the old Rays and breathed life back into them? On a side note, here's my baby!

Mantaray/Stingray/Stangray
i wouldn't care which one! It's the amp I never got 'round to getting. I may have to start looking for a minty red one. It may be impossible but I thought that wen I spent years looking for a red minty Maz GT and I hooked that last year 😎
Perconally, out of all 3 names I like Stangray the best 😊

If the amp ever makes its way to market as a head it would be my ‘Will I buy a black amp’ test !

There’s a red Stang Ray head on Reverb right now... Had a look... Little bit pricey no doubt due to including the flight case.... Landed cost here in Eastern Canada (from California, assuming seller would ship here) would be a bit much. I'll just wait to see what happens on the X-Ray front Thanks for the heads up, though

It's a nice looking amp! It's the right color too! Yea, however, with the elevated price for including the road case (which I wouldn't want), the long shipping all the way accross North America and having to pay taxes at the border....it's just too expensive to justify. We'll just see what happens when the X-Ray comes around.

You know how it goes, d@mn lawyers and such -Greg So I’m guessing if Doc spelled Mazerati with an “S” he would have had a similar problem with the car company?

No problem with cars - only music related items would be an issue.
