Hi Folks,
I love the clean sound of the Remedy but need more clean headroom! I hear swapping out V1 & V3 with 5751s gets you more of a JTM45 thing - does that mean more c/headroom? I have friends with JTM45's/Plexis who say they can't get the vol past 1 or 2 - they're that loud and clean without a master? Also, what speakers would significantly improve the c/headroom situation please?
Thanks

What speaker(s) are you currently using?
If you're not using a V30 or Gold, you might consider using one of those. (Depending on the tone you want) They're both 100db speakers..very loud for a given amp volume. Eminence also makes a few speakers that have high db ratings. I'd stay away from greenbacks (lower db rating)....even though they sound great with the Remedy.
Disclaimer: Only rely on the db ratings of different speakers from the SAME company. One Celestion speaker vs a different Celestion speaker. Don't, for example, compare Eminence vs Celestion db ratings. They measure the db ratings in slightly different ways, and they'll be off.
And I have to ask....you DO have the master all the way up?....and on the 40 watt setting?
And yes, putting a 5751...especially in V1 will clean the amp up. But I don't know if I'd call it a 'JTM-45 thing'. V1 is more important than putting a 5751 in V3 (the phase inverter) for clean headroom.

Hi John and thanks
It's not my amp but a friends I tried a little while back. I loved the cleans which seemed good even at very modest volumes. My concern was the clean headroom as I thought it struggled to stay super clean at higher volumes (after all it is designed for reasonably early break up). It was running through a Dr Z 2x10 fitted with his own speakers at the time. Assuming you can get the 2 speakers you recommended as 10" versions, do you think their efficiency would make a significant difference in the amount of clean headroom available and would it alter the voice of the amp significantly? A pair of Golds wouldn't come cheap!
Also, how significant an improvement would the 5751 in V1 make? And, again, how much would this affect the amp's voice?
Thanks John

struggled to stay super clean at higher volumes... I think we've answered the issue right there. The Remedy just isn't the best choice if you want 'super clean at high volume'. It's wonderful at what it does....but super clean @ high volume just isn't one of them. At a certain point, there's going to be at least a little bit of hair on it. (Which is something I like) Celestion does make a 10" gold. (I have one in my Ghia) But it's 98db....less efficient. I think Weber makes a 10" version of the V30...but Weber is known for making less efficient speakers. From what I understand, the Doc's 10" speakers (made by Eminence) are rather efficient for tens. So that's probably the best you're going to get. I don't think a 5751 will change the tone at all, or at least very little. I bet you wouldn't even notice. Most new 5751 tubes these days are really just 12ax7's that didn't make the gain rating. (registered as less gain) If you want an amp that is loud and still very clean, I would suggest the following: 1) EZG-50 2) Stangray 3) Maz Sr (especially with a 5751 in V1) The Stangray, rated at 30 Watts...is deceivingly loud. It also stays VERY clean. And if you REALLY want loud and clean Remedy tone, go to Sam Ash or Guitar Sinner and get a 4 input Marshall 100 watt plexi reissue. THAT will do it! (and may God have mercy on your neighbors and band mates....LOUD!!) What guitar do you play the most, and what type of music do you play? That could help forum members suggest the proper amp.

This is why I no longer have a Remedy. No matter what I did (tubes, speakers, wattage settings), I could never get it clean *enough* for me. Which is a shame, the Remedy cleans are fantastic, I just couldn't get it loud enough in a band setting.
It also sounds glorious turned all the way up, too! I miss my Remedy...

I know this is an old thread but I have just been using my remedy again after some time away from it.
I've used it with different guitars and have VERY different results on this issue.
With a p90 guitar, there is a nice bit of growl and very little head room. With a Strat type (LsL Saticoy) with vintage style / low output Pus its a totally different story.
This is with the Z 2x10 cab FWIW.

Remedy is very sensitive to the levels coming into the front end. Lower level signals stay a lot cleaner.

I agree with Steve re: Remedy's sensitivity to input level.
If you are still chasing more head room a much better way (as far as chasing a speaker solution) to choose a speaker is the magnet size/weight which typically (but not always) relates to wattage rating.
Two different speakers may have the same sensitivity but have different power ratings. The higher power rated speaker with heavier magnet will stay much, much cleaner at volume. SRV, Hendrix, Johnson etc all used these types of speakers for that reason.
I have found the Electro-Voice EVM12L does a great job and together with a lower gain pre-amp tube (5751, 12AY7 etc.) might just get you where you want to be. Works for me anyway.
If you are a Celestion guy you might try a G12T-75. I had a cab loaded with a pair of these that sounded great. I only parted with one of them to give to a guy I met at a gig who told me he used these, but blew one out and could not afford to replace it. I figured "Chive on". He really needs one more that I certainly do and met him the next day to give him one. Boy you'd think I gave him a million bucks!
I might still have the other one in the bullpen. If you are interested, give me a shout.
Any-hoo, good luck. I hope you find the tone your chasing.

I'll just add, regarding speakers, that I have run my Rem thru my 2x12 cab (that I usually use with my BF Band Master). It has Cannabis Rex (hemp) speakers. It takes quite a bit to get break up on these.
It's not a combo I would have immediately put together, but I was in the studio and had the BM with the 2x12 and my Remedy with the 2x10 cabs set up...we were just playing around and that combo sounded great.
When I get a sec, I'll try that set up with a p90 and a les Paul to see if I can crank it and keep it clean.
