I've been missing the Fender tone of late and am thinking about picking up a Fender Deluxe Reverb RI. The main concerns I have are A) how much more headroom/volume will I get with the DRRI, if any more at all, and B) Would a Fender amp cut as well as the M12?
My fear is that even though the DRRI is rated at 22 watts, I have a feeling the M12 is going to be just as loud with the same amount of headroom maybe more. I don't really want to duplicate my rig here, just want to get a nice Fender tone that could also double as a louder gigging amp when more wattage is needed to keep things clean.

Try the 68 Custom Deluxe reverb silver face it has satisfied my need for a loud clean tone that is until I get to hear a Z lux up close. Also does overdrive nicely but I have my Maz junior for that need.

Pretty different amps. The DR will be close to 20-22 watts, about double the M12. The tone stacks are way different as well. You can get a DR like tone with the right speaker and the right tone settings.

As greenblues58 alludes, save up for a Z-Lux. "Deluxe on steroids" per Guitar Player review. Plus you get Dr Z build quality and 40 watts when/if you want it. Imo, better to go this route as an M12 complement.

Check out my posts in another thread, starting with this one here (and scroll down for a couple more). I was able to get the M12 sounding darned close to my Deluxe Reverb Reissue (with its reverb turned off) through the same speaker. If anything, the M12 sounded a little "better" and more organic, but it was splitting hairs at that point. Basically, no the M12 will not go as loud/clean as the Deluxe Reverb—the DR is capable of going louder, cleaner than the M12. But that's actually what I love about the M12, as it's lower-volume settings are much easier to control (better taper on the amp's volume knob). Hope that helps...

Not wanting to dis Fender, but they just don't build them any where near th Dr Z quality. My friend who repairs amps isn't thrilled by Fender QC. Not the worst... Apparently the Z-Lux fills the bill quite nicely. More than a DRRI ($), but can you put a price on quality? ME

Ive been gassing lately for a deluxe reverb as well, real bad. then I realised afte playing my Jaz 20/40, Ive got the deluxe reverb right here, only better. I was seriously considering the 68 custom deluxe reverb but the reviews on the noise are terrible, the reviews on tone are great but all I hear is how noisy and hissy they are, so I have to control not buying one due to that factor. Im still seriously gassing for a fender amp and keep thinking of wanting a deluxe but have to keep reminding myself I have the Jaz, so now im looking into buying a super reverb. as Id like to have 1 fender in my arsenal. I own the Z jaz 20/40, the M12 and the maz jr and I love all 3, but like you have been wanting fender tone lately as well

There is a background level of hiss on my 68 Custom deluxe but it doesn't get any louder as you increase the volume it's there all the time. its no worse than most amps when they are turned up and isnt noticeable at any level once your playing. I had some reverb noise but fitting a decent RFT 12AT7 and a better cable from tank to amp resolved the issue and improved the reverb. The blend of the two channels together at volume with a strat is very SRV.

They are built much more like a Z. Get one serviced, correctly bias'd, with good tubes and it will last for many years. Some of that hiss is due to the cheap tube selection.

Thanks for the help guys. I actually bought a 68 Custom Deluxe last year, but ended up joining a church band and returned it for an HD500...Lord help me on that decision lol.
I don't remember much noise at all. It seemed to really be a non-issue for me during the 3 weeks I had it.
