well ok i know there is going to be a certain level of tube rattle regardless because its a combo but this seems to be worse than usual. its becoming pretty annoying and im going to be recording in a few weeks so i want to have it fixed before then. i could take it to the shop but if i can fix it myself it would be nice. any ideas on how to fix this mess would be fantastic. thanks.

The problem is that I am not sure if the rattle comes from the tubes or not. It is hard to tell whether it's the tubes or the sockets or something else. I am driving myself nuts trying to find where it comes from.

yeah im not sure if those tube dampers will work. $8 is a bit steep as well. plus an amp tech i talked to said these were probably not a good idea. any other suggestions would be fantastic. thanks.

Harmony Central has some individual talk about a batch of faulty tube retainers that were a problem with some Maz Jr. amps causing rattles etc. I wonder if anybody could confirm this?

No he didn't mention the year of the amp. According to the write-up the guy had sent his amp back for repairs and had the problem fixed. My amp is 2000.

ok so i took my amp to the shop today. the guy was real helpful and at first he thought it was a bad preamp tube. changed it. same thing continued to happen. tried another tube. same thing. he tried pushing the tube up and it stopped the rattling. it turns out that either the socket needs to be fixed or completely replaced. im taking it back next week to have it worked on. i'll keep you posted.

Mine rattles too and like you I'm not so sure it's a tube. It is very frustrating.

basically the amp tech just slightly pushed on each tube until he found out exactly which one was rattling. we went from there.

EL84 tubes rattle..its the filaments..try swapping positions on the power tubes...but most likely there isn't any way of stopping this ..I have owned a few EL84 amps..Carr, DrZ, Fender ..the design of the EL84 is notorious for rattles..so are EL34's ...that is the only reason I wound up selling my Ghia combo..and bought a Z28..the 6V6 tubes are much more of a sturdy design and tube rattle is less likely I have found..but the Ghia head shouldn't rattle as much..it seems that the combo's put out alot of sonic frequencies that hit the tubes directly..and in the head version you shouldn't have that problem..however..when I had my Ghia 2-10 combo..I ordered a set of tubes from Lord Valve and explained to him the rattle and asked him to send a set that when held by the tube pins and tap on the tube lightly that they wouldn't rattle..he did send a set that worked just fine..but EL84's just seem to always do this..its just that tube..I will take 6l6 and 6v6 tubes any day of the week for this reason alone..
