I am primarily a slightly dirty clean amp with pedal player and am considering smaller Z's due to Route being too big for small venues.
I am considering the Z-28, M12 and the Monza. Can it be a relatively clean amp with volume or is it primarily a "dirt box".
Anyone with both the Monza and Route out there?
Cheers

If you like your Route 66 the Z-28 would be a natural shift. I know several guys who have made that move. I like the Monza, had a rented one for 3 weeks on tour once. You can get a clean sound out of it but that's not really it's strongest suit.

The Monza's all about early breakup. Doen't take pedals well. Thought I'd love them (I've owned two), but was really into Teles at the time and couldn't find a setting that worked for me. The Z-28 is an awesome amp, but also pretty loud--I needed a breaklite to gig it in small clubs. The M12 on the high setting is about as loud as the Maz 18 and has maybe more headroom; on the low setting it can do great tones at near bedroom levels. The Z-28 and the M12 both take pedals beautifully. The Z-28 is a mid-voiced amp--really jumps forward in a band setting. The M12 is more transparent--kind of a chameleon amp that takes on the character of whatever pedal and guitar you're running through it. Nice cleans if you're into that kind of thing.

That hall VVR-modded RT66 seems like it might be a way to go for you...

I started with 66 now it is Z28. I think the 28 has a better clean and sounds good at different volumes. I always thought the 66 sounded better cranked.

I've owned the R66, Z28, and M12. The Z28 is brighter... And still very loud. The M12 has more tonal versatility, but only you will be able to decide if it has enough headroom.

i use a monza and an rx jr,,, i have had a 66 and the 28 and kt45 even with a master volume, it is sometimes a bit tough to get a good low vol sound with the monza...it is around same watts as the 28 but it is a loud little thing. i was able to back way off the drive and tone and get a real nice clean tone at a lower vol,,depending on type of music i wold go with the 28 for blues and some rock , but for zz top or heavier the monza is nice to have,, but to me, it is just not a low volume type amp. i use the rx jr, which i have found is almost perfect, with the boost pedal you can do get 3 pretty nice different tones with a fuzz pedal or something. i still sometimes dont enjoy the master vol on these cause these amps really need to be opened up to sound the best,,i think its the el84 tubes. i have two fender type amps with reverb with 6L6s and i sure wouldnt want to have an el84 amp only.
