I'm borrowing a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe off a friend and for the price its a great amp.
I currently have a Dr Z Remedy with a dr z 1x12 cab with a Gold speaker which i love.
They are completely different circuits i know but i thought what if i disconnected the speaker from the Fender Hot Rod and connected up to the Dr Z cab with Gold.
Straight away i sounded so much better. Really tight bottom end like i experience from the remedy, and a much nicer pleasing eq.
Its amazing how much a speaker can change the tone of an amp!
My question is...
If i was to take out the stock speaker from the Fender and put a Gold in there would it sound like what i experienced with the Dr Z cab.
I'm guessing the cab makes a big difference too?
The speaker is £200 so i guess Fender don't wanna put it these types of speakers as they would need to put there prices up?

Speaker swaps in Fender cabs will make a difference. My buddy put a Greenback in his DRRI and really improved the tone of the amp alot. Lots of stuff matters when it comes to your tone. Speakers can effect that a lot. My 2 cents, Todd

They made a special run of Hot Rod Deluxes with V30's in them that sounded awesome....cheaper than Gold. I think the cab will make it softer and a tad less bright maybe....compared to the Z Cab.

You might want to check out Dr Z's new Z-12, the speaker designed for the Z-Lux. I would think it would go really well with the Fender since the Z-Lux is "Fendery." Doc sells them for $89 US plus shipping. Not sure if they're available outside US.

Yes. The speaker swap would sound very close to what you are hearing.

The clean sound on the HRD is nothing to sneeze at. The folks at Fender do know a thing about clean amps, IIRC.
However, not nearly as well-constructed as the Doc's offerings - natch!
I had a HRD for awhile, & it was a great cheap amp. I tried it using 6V6s (from Eurotubes, these are apparently pretty much 6L6s, & so can take the voltage) ,& after a rebus, it sounded pretty great. Never thought to swap the speaker, although in retrospect it seems like an obvious thing to do.
Even more obvious was to sell it & but a Mini-Z, which was my gateway into Z amps!

I have the predecessor to yer HRD. It's just a Blues Deluxe..... Not the hr version. I replaced the original speaker with a celestion gold and really loved the change. However, it was really loud, so I replaced the gold with a celestion g12m Creamback which is a less efficient speaker. I am really digging the amp now. Def NOT a Z, but Probably the best $500 used amp on the planet.
