Hey, everyone -
I am finding that the natural distortion on the Maz is too strident for me - but I really love the clean tone. I play with some gain (think Malcolm to Angus levels) and I am thinking of using the Maz with a Marshall in a box for my dirt, and letting the Maz handle my clean sounds. I use mostly 57 Classics in an SG.
I have a Mythical Overdrive Klon Klone I can use to goose whatever pedal I use for solos. Here are a few MIAB pedals that I know of:
Barber Direct Drive Catalinbread Dirty Little Secret ZVex Box of Rock Carl Martin Plexitone Wampler PlexiDrive (plextortion also)
So: I am looking for a pedal that does a convincing Marshall 'clang' (or whatever you call it) through the Maz - a pedal that could be left on most of the time, allowing for volume knob roll - back on the guitar to clean it up some. What do you think?
I love the idea of the Barber DD that has two channels - I could leave my MO off my board and just use the one pedal.
What say you?

Xotic SL Drive sounds good to me. Plenty of crunchy tones.

I like the JHS Charlie Brown and Angry Charlie.
I chose the Angry Charlie as I already had the Double Barrel which handles low and medium gain and the Angry is the higher gain of JHS' two Marshall influenced designs.
Love JHS Pedals!

Cool - thanks for the suggestions. Do these clean up pretty well with the volume knob on the guitar?

Well, I'm a huge Barber fan (have/had 'em all, tried vs. all the other top boutiques, etc., etc.) so I'm gonna suggest the dual-channel Direct Drive ("DD/DC" as it's called).
One of the 2 Direct Drive channels--the LG or "low-gain" one--has compared extremely closely to my Klone; in fact, in some ways, I prefer the DD-LG over the Klone. So, I think this could certainly take the place of your MO pedal, as you mentioned. And the higher-gain "regular" Direct Drive circuit/channel is top-notch for traditional British-rock overdrive/gain/distortion.
Almost all Barber overdrives clean up very well with the guitar's volume knob, too, and the Direct Drive is one of them.

Zvex Box of Rock OR (probably better off) Distortron (same pedal almost, just adds a 3-way SUB switch) is a perfect Marshall in a box sound. That pedal sounds so great through a juicy clean amp. I've been messing around with my friends Distortron and absolutely love the Marshall grind it gives the Maz. Highly recommended and can be found for under $100.

Cool - thanks for the suggestions. Do these clean up pretty well with the volume knob on the guitar? The JHS pedals clean up very well with my rig which is usually an ES-335 into a MAZ 18JR Reverb

You could do a lot worse than the venerable OCD V4. For whatever reason, the OCD mates up very well with a a Maz 18, as long as you keep that tone knob below noon.

I have owned several "Marshall in a box" pedals...Wampler Plexi-drive, Catalinbread DLS mkiii, JHS Angry Charlie, and J Rockett Animal. Out of all of those I gig with the Animal every weekend. The Animal has a "hot" switch for higher and lower gain settings...which also brings out some harmonics. It gives you standard vol, gain, bass and treble controls. I think retail price is $199.00 but I see them used on ebay for as low as $120.00.

Another nod here for the Box of Rock. Not only does it have THAT Marshall thang going for it, but it also has an extra switchable boost that can be used with or with out the gain channel.

Tech 21 Hot Rod Plexi might be worth a look.

Looking at a bunch of the suggestions now. I really like the idea of having a built in boost - the Barber DD/DG and the Wampler Plexi Drive Deluxe are really catching my eye right now. The bigger Carl Martin Plexi Tone has it as well, but I don't want the ac cord thing. I think the Menatone KOTB has a boost as well. I am leaning Wampler at this point - there are some good demos out there.
Would that Wampler match up with the Maz pretty well? I am new to how the Maz takes pedals.

When I think of "Marshall in a box" the MI Audio Crunch Box comes first to my mind. And very affordable. Highly suggest you check it out before you make a decision.

I used to have one - great gain on that - it didn't clean up enough with the guitar knob to be an always on pedal. They do sound good, though!

What about the Marshall Blues Breaker pedal! I had one that sounded very much like my Marshalls.

The Lovepedal Purple Plexi. I have tried the Catalinbread DSL, Mi Audio Crunch box, the Wampler Plexi Drive, and the J Rockett Animal with my Maz 18. The Purple Plexi beat them all hands down. I play a Les Paul standard with a Seymour Duncan 59 in the bridge and a PRS Custom 24 with 59/09 pickups.

Stumbled onto a local deal for a Catalinbread Dirty Little Secret (newest version), so I'm gonna give that a try. Thanks for all the help here! I'll report back after band practice when I can crank it a little.

Try both high and low input jacks with the pedal.

Running it at 18 volts from the Pedal Power II - into the low input. Yep! And a shot with the Maz and SG

Lol! No, I'm not Gearmanndude... I am Jack Black. I do love my coily cable of good funky lovin' though! Yeah, Drzdevotee - the Klon Klone into the DLS is pretty dang good! Loving the DLS so far. Running it with the gain all the way down - just a good Malcolm-ish crunchy thing going on. Hit it with the Mythical Overdrive Klone, and BAM - great lead tone. I love the Catalinbread Belle Epoch I have on my board too - cool vintage delay sounds. big jilm
