All, I've been using the Carmen Ghia as my main amp for a while now and I love that amp. I put it on top of the Monza and use the Monza's Red Fang. But, I fired up the Monza the other day and I really miss it for a couple of songs we do in the band. So, how many of you use two amps for gigs? I would love to take the Monza and the CG with my 1x12 Z cab with a Blue, but I'm starting to get old and I don't like carrying a bunch of stuff! lol Thoughts? Solution? Suck it up and take said equipment?

I used a two-amp setup years ago (Vibrolux and Deluxe Reverb), but I got old and didn't like carrying a bunch of stuff too! It can make for a big glorious tone though if you don't mind humping the extra gear.

Did I understand you right....aren't you using the Ghia on top of the Monza as it is now? Just get a head switcher and run both heads thru the one speaker and switch between amps. I did that for awhile and loved it but wound up getting a custom cab with a 12 and a 10 in it, and ran them in stereo/ABY thru that one cab. For lighter though the head switcher and a Ghia head on top a Monza 1x10 combo would be as light as light as two amps get.

I've thought about a stereo 2x12, but that would be heavy.

I love using 2 amps. They could be the same amp or different amps but usually one a little dirtier than the other.
I keep 'em both on the floor and never, ever turn one off.

That's what I would like to do I think. I would use the CG for clean (for the B9) and medium gain (by using the Flying Dragon) and use the Monza for the heaver blues based stuff that we do. But Eric, you don't normally take two amps around in New York now do you? I know you used two or three amps in the past with Steve Earle.

A Carmen Ghia head atop the Monza 1×10 combo would be a marvelous (and relatively light & compact) clean-ish/dirty setup. The only 3rd item you'd need is a Radial Headbone VT... and maybe a new/loger speaker cable or 2, but talk to pcns about that and you'll be all set.

I too used to run two amps - clean and dirty - and just blend them both with an expression pedal. Was a lot of fun. But I have also gotten better using just the vol knob on the guitar or a pedal and decided not to lug the gear around as much. It is worth doing a few times in your life though!

I haven't played too many gigs of "my own music" since the Lakeside closed but when I do I like to use 2 amps. At this point I've advised a lot of the places that I play on their backlines so there are a lot of available Pro Jr's laying around. So I'll either bring a 2nd or use one of theirs as my 2nd but mostly if it's "my own gig" rather than playing with another band. Even a real small amp like an AC4 adds something different to the situation. The MAZ 8 is a Terrific amp in the 2 amp rig situation.

Radial Headbone VT was the one...IS the one. Pretty much the only choice really.

What settings do you use as a base with an LP?

If I was running 2 of them I'd put one on 7 for the volume and the other on 4 or 5 for volume. cleaner one a little brighter.

I'm playing a gig tomorrow night with a Ghia and Monza as a two amp setup, each in a 110 combo cab. The Ghia is going through a redfang and the Monza a Dr Z 10. Ghia set 12:00 on volume and tone, one or two clicks on brakelite, bottom of the stack. Monza, volume and drive at 12:00, tone 10:00, master between 10:00 and 11:00, top of stack. Both on all night long, humbucker guitars. It's a smaller place with a cozy stage. The footprint will be small, but the volume won't be. That's at least where I'm starting the night. Place doesn't care about volume, so if we get a crowd and they're up dancing, may get to turn up from there.

I thought of rigging my Ghia and Monza together, but couldn't figure out how to make the pedalboard work for both heads without major readjustments. If the FX were tuned for Ghia, they'd be too hot for the Monza and vice versa. So it wouldn't be as simple as a foot stomp. Any pedal board user resolve this?

Personally, I like the randomness of just going for it with the two amps, how they respond differently to the pedals and all. The other thing you can do is have one amp skip all the pedals.

Good gig! Sad that it's closed, I would have loved to play another gig there.

I always take two amps to a gig, just in case. Lately I've been taking a Z-28 and a Monza, both 1-10 combos with red fangs. The last time I did this, I threw my old Morley ABY in my gig bag and ran them together; the Monza for dirt and the Z-28 for clean. Wow! That was a blast.
