Brand new (in 1966). A long, smooth plate RCA 12AX7/Ecc83 preamp tube...the best of the best imho. Musta had a micro fracture in the glass from the factory, or from half a century of handling. I plugged it in for its first time.....and it died! RIP sweet Holy Grail tube!

I have some NOS Mullards and Brimars that have gone microphonic over the years....most of them recently. It is sad. Sad indeed.
Sent from my SM-N900V using proboards

Sent from my SM-N900V using proboards Paul....do you know those super NOS tubes that have gone microphonic work really well in the Phase-Inverter position? You still get the super quality, carcinogen-based parts that last for ever, and sound like Jimi, Jimmy, and George.....and the microphonics don't matter at all in PI land!

That is why they still reside here. I can use them in V2 or the PI and they do fine. They sound great in V1 till they start the uncontrolled squealing. I love the old stuff...but nothing is bullet proof. I sure wish they were. That reminds me...I need more NOS preamp tubes...probably more NOS rectifiers too. Hope you are well down that way sir. Dang! Sorry about that, Lee. Oh, well. Some of the newer tubes aren't horrible. These things were always considered a "consumable" part of the amp, I guess.
I bought a NOS Raytheon 12ax7 from KCA about ten years ago. Sounded very nice for about an hour. I went to remove it to swap in a different tube and I broke it.
And then there was the time I plugged in a 12AT7 into my tube tester and forgot to adjust the dial for a 12at. It glowed really bright for a couple of seconds before it went out.
And then one time at a gig...

First Time? That isn't right at all. That's wrong in every way....for the tube and you.
