I was in Brighton with my younger son yesterday having a lads day out, bumming round all the great coffee shops and veggie restaurants, and second hand guitar shops
We headed to our favourite spot, Brighton Guitars, run by guys who actually have a passion for guitars and are always friendly and upbeat, when I spot, hidden on one wall, a gorgeous ES339 Custom Shop in tobacco sunburst.
(this is a stock picture - the one I saw had a GORGEOUS flame top and back!!)
We took it down, found a room with a valve amp, sorry toob amp, and started noodling. I fell in love immediately! What a machine!! Neck pup was John Mayer's "I Got a Woman" right there; mid position with some gain was Billy Gibbons to a tee; and the bridge, with just a hint of gain, was Clapton's Cream era....... The neck was identical to my LP Special, so I loved it even more! It was a 2008 model being sold by the shop for the owner and to say it was spotless was a gross understatement! According to the shop guy, the owner was a bit of a hobby-collector; didn't play very well, and never gigged, so this thing was in its case most of its life. The shop had put new strings on it, which was a SMART move.
Anyhow, we left the shop with details and a knock down price, and headed to the bank just to check on funds as I Was working out how to get this and sell my PRS to part fund it.......... when my darling son stops in the street and says "Dad! I have to have that guitar!! I've never played anything as good. I just have to have it! Do you mind?"
What can you say to that, eh? I was momentarily tempted to run back to the shop before him and grab it myself, but he's 19 and MUCH fitter than me, so that wouldn't have worked so I took the moral high ground.......... he literally ran back to shop, dropped his VISA on the desk, and walked out 5 mins later as the proud new owner of one of the loveliest guitars either of us have ever played..........
Then he says, "Dad, i know you wanted this too, so you can borrow it to gig with when I'm not using it, if you want..." What a man my boy has become!
Proud, yet ever so slightly, envious, dad!
