Just placed my order for a blonde M12 at humbucker music. Hope I like this amp as much as you guys say how great it is It should sit in well with my Maz Jr and Jaz 20/40 for having some versatility in power options.

I have played my M12 through a Avatar 2x12 closed back cab before, it seemed oversized but either way it was physically pretty big and I am not a big fan of that cab for the M12. I think you're in the right direction with going towards a Z cab.

Don't be shy about cranking it up. Imo, Doc set the volume taper to keep the drive to the front end low and smooth to accommodate pedals. But, being, Dr Z, he also made sure the amp could sing on its own. It's all in cranking up the tone knobs. One fun approach is to set input to Hi, keep bass below noon, crank treble up to 3 o'clock and sweep the volume knob. (I was using a Tele mostly when fooling around with that.)

My thoughts on the M12. Man is it loud for 12 watts. My ears are ringing. It has great cleans, I mean great! Love playing it with and with out pedals. If I need more volume I just bump up the gain on an overdrive and it is plenty for me. Im not too keen on the stock celestion G12M 65 speaker in the 1x12 cabinet though. To me it sounds thin and harsh, although it does warm up nicely when I add a little more bass and cut the treble back but It will be swapped out for a weber silver bell. I notice that the amp seems a littler hotter or brighter if you will, with the switch set to hi position, which I like but it feels a little warmer to me when set to lo. I tried it with a 2x12 cabinet and it just sounds absolutely huge and bigger than its 12 watts. Im definitely digging this amp and I will be trying it out tonight in a live gig with my band, I will be pairing it with a 2x12 cabinet to get that bigger fuller sound until I can get my weber silver in for my 1x12. Im glad I picked this amp up. Now Im always going to have a dilema on which amp to use for a gig, the M12, the Jaz 20/40 or the Maz jr. I love them all.

Glad you like your new M12 It really is a great amp. And when paired with the right cab and speaker(s) - it's way more capable than a mere 12 watts. And like I've said before, speaker and cab are key with this amp and accomplishing it maximum potential and whether it's a right fit for you. And yer thoughts on the HI/LO input are spot on. Which brand name and model of 1x12 were you using again?

Last nights gig I used an avatar 2x12 with eminence texas heats and it killed. kept up with the band no problem.

This amp just keeps getting better and better to my ears. I absolutely love its tightness and cleans, and huge sound with a 2x12 cabinet. Ive used it for one gig, and have been using it for rehearsals but I can see this amp going to several gigs and becoming my first choice over my Maz and Jaz for indoor venues.

The M12 is such a killer design and capable of delivering amazing tonal range. If you haven't already, try running a clean boost a little above unity. Just leave it on all the time. THEN, hit an OD. you will be even more shocked than you already are. Pedals stack amazingly well. As for speakers, I think the absolute best pairing with a 1x12 is a broken in blue. I know it doesn't always deliver the low end that a lot of us like, but when I had a blue in my closed back port city cab it just sounded glorious! Do yourself a favor and go ahead and order a NOS EF86. The modern production tubes just don't hold up very long. Doc recommended a Dario Mini-Watt for me and it has worked great for over 24 months now. Also, I much prefer to get JJ El84's that are properly burned in before I get them. He's a pain in the rear, but Lord Valve at NBS Electronics in Denver always sends me tubes that just seem to outlast tubes I get from almost anyone else...FWIW. Glad you are on the M12 train. this amp is so well thought out and it performs beautifully. It deserves more serious attention from great players. I love how Doc used an EF86 front end but unlike other great EF86 amps out there, he wisely realized that if you try to squeeze all of the harmonic complexity out of that tube it just kills the ability of the amp to handle pedals really well. so he put in just enough of the magic EF86 dust to make it complex, but not so much that you cant run pedals and have them sound great. Genius!

Thats how Ive been running the M12 is with a clean boost n above unity, then OD, Man o man, thick, full and rich and is able to keep up with the band. Im loving it. Ive been using it with my 2x12 cab with texas heats but am also waiting fr a weber silver bell to cme in for my 1x12. I dont much care for the celestion creamback that was stock, or any celestions for that matter, to me they sound harsh and brittle and thin, although Im wondering what a gold would sound like. But to me, celestions just arent the right speaker for blues music, maybe I just havent found the right one yet. Ill definitely check into the nos ef86. I use JJ's for all my other amps so Im sure Ill be getting them for this one as well. I love this amp!

I like the M12 with a Gold just fine. Even better with a Gold/G12H30 paired.

I like the M12 with a Gold just fine. Even better with a Gold/G12H30 paired. is this a good mix for blues and blues rock? Im wondering if there would be too much mids and not enough low end or if it would produce a thinner more brittle sound? Im looking for something thick and juicy specifically for blues and blues rock

It's great for blues/blues-rock to my ear--YMMV, as always. The Gold has a big, tight bottom (don't you love the way we talk about stuff?), rounded top and a fair amount of mid presence, so it's great with a Strat; the G12H30 also has rounded highs, a bit of a mid scoop, plenty of bottom end and breaks up a little sooner than the Gold. They're kind of ying/yang as a pairing; together they're well balanced with sweet upper mids, big lows and rounded highs. Wouldn't call it thin or brittle at all, but that might be a perception thing. If everybody's ears were the same, they'd only make one kind of speaker.
