Hi there, I'm new to this forum.
Currently running my H&K tube amp through my Dr. Z 2x12 open cap. With lots of pedals in front. Now it's time to "downgrade" to a nice single channel amp. I currently got an option on an used MAZ18 JR. As it's the old version (no FX loop, no 16 Ohm speaker out, no footswitch), I'm wondering if any of you guys can tell me if there are any differents tone wise.
Thanks so far

FWIW, I've played through newer ones, as well as my old Maz 18 NR (my main amp), which has no EQ bypass, but does have an effects loop. I can't remember if it has a 16-ohm speaker out, but I want to say it does not. I've also played through one older than mine with no EQ bypass and no effects loop (again, can't remember if it had a 16-ohm out or not). However, I have not played through all of these back-to-back-to-back. That being said, every time I try an amp I haven't played, my practice is to start by putting the tone stacks at noon, whatever they may be. As for my own Maz 18 NR 1x12 combo, that's what I always have it set to, but I play through a celestion blue as opposed to the stock speaker.
All that being said, in all my experience of firing up a Maz 18, no matter the age, when it's been running through a Celestion G12H30 with the tone stacks all at noon, I've never been hit with the impression of "Hmmm...this Maz sounds dramatically different than the (older/newer) one(s) I've played!"
Lotta caveats there, so I might not be that helpful. The best person to ask would be someone at Dr. Z. They're outstanding to deal with, however, and they'll get in touch with you for sure!
If you do call up Dr. Z HQ and get a reply on the topic, please do share with Z-Talk! I'm interested to know the verdict.

The EQ bypass can act like a another channel. It's really cool, and I can't imagine playing my Maz18 without it. I'd recommend checking it out, especially if you play live...

Funny. I can't imagine ever using it. It just sounds way out of control.

Could be I have it more tamed in the studio, 'cause I just listen for the right tone and don't have to worry about matching levels during a song. I hear tons of stories tho, and have heard a few bands live that kick into the EQ Bypass for soloing (use it as a solo boost). Long Live the Dr!!!

I don't think you'll find a vast difference. ALL of the Jr's I have encountered are just great amps. Mine has the EQ bypass, but I rarely use (need) it because the amp overdrives so beautifully with just a nudge of the guitar volume. I like the reverb model, it doesn't have quite the gain of the NR, just depends on your needs.

As I'm mainly interested in using it clean with my pedals, I guess I will go with the deal. Unfortunately Germany is not the best place to simply go to a store and test drive a Dr. Z. Thanx

Thanx I believe if you are using it as a clean platform, you'll be happy with a MAZ18, no matter the options. I could not believe an amp could sound so good...

It does interact nicely with pedals - but it does interact. If you want your pedal tone unaltered, you'll probably be better off with amps that have more clean headroom. My Klone as well as my EP booster push the amp into overdrive nicely and I use them to get the amp's overdrive cooking rather than the unadulterated "pedal tone".
Also, say hi to Ron (proguitar.de) from me, gerrit666. I bought my 2x10" NR there a few months ago. Great place to test out Zs and other cool amps (Divided by 13, Tone King etc.).
