Ok guys,
I just got a new (to me) 6545 head from a seller on eBay. Overall, the amp sounds great. I'm really digging the crunch tones! But before I gush any more, I want to share a few things and ask a few questions.
1) The master volume on the SRZ 65 side of the 6545 doesn't seem to work as well as my regular SRZ-65 MV. I mean I can get excellent, near bedroom levels with the SRZ-65 but the 65 side of the 6545 Master Volume just doesn't sound the same. That's weird, right? ***(And my SRZ-65 seems to have more gain overall...I wonder if that's a preamp tube thing...)
2) The "idle" noise of the 6545 is higher than most any amp I've owned. Not a big deal once I get going with the band, but I have a feeling for recording projects I will need to be a little more mindful of hum and buzz, etc. Is this unique to me?
3) The idea of the two amps in one (a clean KT-45 and dirty 65) seems good in theory, but for me, isn't quite working. I mean, the 65 side lives up to it's role- it can be quite dirty ala a JMP-50 or Super Lead. But the KT-45, at least when I plug in my Les Paul, can't stay clean with the Volume higher than 9 o'clock. This is nowhere near the "clean" amp volume I would normally seek and the tone is a bit sterile and lifeless (IMO) compared to when the gain on the KT 45 is up higher or compared to my other favorite clean amps (EZG-50 or 60's Bassman). Am I missing something with the KT side?
Anyways, I welcome your thoughts and opinions.
On the strictly positive side of things...
1) The 65 side = basically the best classic 70's crunch tones you could think of. I do hope to get a little bit more gain out of the preamp section and I welcome suggestions.
2) The 45 side = SUPER FAST TRANSIENT RESPONSE! I think that's why the KT-45 gets described as "Hiwatt-ish." It doesn't actually sound much like a Hiwatt to me (it's a bit more Vox AC50 or Marshall to my ears) but the response to picking dynamics "feels" almost exactly like an old 50 watt Hiwatt. I love that sound and I love the KT side cranked up- it's a great crunch tone too.
3) I actually see this amp as a "2 for 1" dirty amp. The KT side is the crunchy Hiwatt/Vox hybrid and the SRZ side is Marshall-esque. That's not a bad thing at all (it's pretty great to get two different crunch tones) it's just not what I was expecting.
Cheers!
