Anybody tried the JJ EL844s? I ran a set in my amp with no issues at all...good overall sound...didn't really notice a lot of volume difference.

You should get a set of stock tubes from the website, just so you have a reference for what tubes the Doc tuned the amp with... You may be completely content with that combination of tubes... Or you'll want something different. But at least you'll know. I think it's always nice to start with the amp the way it was originally intended to run (sound) before you tinker with things. At least that's what I've been trying, and I'm happy with the stock configuration of tubes after having tried some other ones.. I'll experiment again but I'm happy right now

I ran TAD's in mine and loved them - made the cleans fatter and warmer while retaining clarity. I run them in my M12 now, and much prefer them over the JJ's, EHX, and Tung Sols I previously tried, although the Tung Sols were close.

I vote for Mullard El84's. They break up easy and are nice and smooth. I was using the Sovtek military tubes Dr Z recommends. Maybe I got some bad one's, but they rattled and then failed. For now, the Mullards are holding up fine.
On thing I noticed, you can try shaking the tubes next to your ear before you put them in. Some rattle right out of the box....

I pulled the JJ EL84s out of my 2x10 MAZ 18 and replaced with a pair of Russian 6p14p's from long-time forum member perryr. The improvement was immediately apparent even to my relatively insensitive ear. The were reasonable priced ($50 pair) but I don't know if Perry has increased the price do go along with recent inflation. They are very durable to boot.
