After one of my bands developed a serious case of the "turn-downs" with my Maz18, I decided to start looking for something that would suit my overall needs in one main amp. It needed to have sweet cleans for country, low enough wattage that I could get the tubes working without undermining the point of having a tube amp, mic well but still fill a room when alone, and take pedals like a champ. I also wanted to simplify my rig, so going back to a combo was high on my list of wants, but the Maz18 combo I'd previously owned was silly heavy for what it was.
About a week ago, a local gear-swap group on Facebook listed a M12 for sale or possible trade - and it was red ;-). Knowing this amp was a- designed for taking pedals, and b- was voiced somewhat like a small Stang Ray, which is right up there by the Therapy as an eventual goal, I offered up my Maz18nr head in a straight swap for the M12 with a Brake Lite installed. The speaker was a V-30, which did not do what I wanted in this amp at all. Fortunately for me, the cab I was running my Maz through had a Celestion Gold in it...which ain't bad ;-).
Anyway, here it is - in and out of surgery, because even doctors need some healthcare once in a while ;-)
I know we all know the type of workmanship that goes into these, but sometimes the little things are overlooked. This was something I found extremely interesting - I've never seen this on other amps before, but it would surely save your tolex and wood from getting torn up over the years:
Post transplant, I figured a little cosmetic surgery was is order, so I slapped one of Harvey's wooden Z's on there:
I was leaning towards ordering a custom valance from Harvey, and probably still will, but I find it looks pretty damned sharp as is too.
So, there she is - the New Z Day. I doubt Premier Guitar will be showing up at my place anytime soon, so here's the amp with a quick rig run-down for this evening (first gig with the M12 - mic'd, of course - cover band doing mix of country and classic rock).
Guitar - Fender MIA '52 AVRI Hot Rod (Budz 5/4/2 bridge pup with a Budz Firebird in the neck, and the highly technical brocolli elastic string dampening system installed on the headstock)
Board - NYCPedalboards in desperate need of a vacuum job ;-)
Effects: Pitch Black Tuner -> Custom Comp -> Rockett Archer -> Rockbox Boiling Point -> Tremolessence -> #23 HW Deep Blue Delay -> EHX Holy Grail Nano
Amp - duh... ;-) I ended up removing the attenuator. While cool, it served no purpose in my needs for this amp.
