I have replaced electronics (pots/jacks/switches/pups) in so many guitars I have lost count. But doing an overhaul on a hollow body WITHOUT F HOLES is a serious hassle. I finally got it all buttoned back up, and thank God it works, but good grief!
Thanks for listening. I feel a little better. :-) Eddie

Eddie, Getting ready to tackle my Eastman 186 thinline, but it does have f-holes. Still not looking forward to it.

I always tie long strings onto the pot shafts and switch before letting them fall into the body. That way you can pull 'em right back to the correct hole. I also plug a very thin plug and cord into jack before dropping it. It's still a bugger tho. At least you don't have to hide the wiring as much when there are no F holes...

I saw a guy on youtube use 1/4" tubing to slide over the pot shaft and pull it into place thru the hole in the guitar. Seemed like a good trick. Never tried it myself though.

I hear ya Eddie - I've done a couple of 335's - at least they had F-holes. Still broke a lotta sweat though.

Best left to a pro IMHO not something I would consider undertaking. Too much opportunity to balls up and do some damage. When I had new pots and caps fitted in my 335 my tech said he always builds a complete new harness as finds it easier but didn't charge me any more than his normal fee for changing or replacing pots. Recently had the pickups changed in it but he had already fitted the harness with the facility to do this without having to remove anything.

I use shoe laces... Easy to find... The lace ends fit in the slots of the pot shafts and hold well enough. It's still a pail though.

Yeah, I saw some YouTube vids with techs demonstrating the string technique. They made it look easy, but my mileage certainly did vary! :-)
I did build the whole assembly out side of the guitar on a table. Basic setup with 2 volume, 2 tone, tone caps, 3 way switch, jack. Then I flipped it all upside down on top of the guitar and wired the pup leads and grounds. I think some of the trickyness on this one, aside from my lack of experience, was the style of this particular guitar. It's not that deep, the controls sit back and close to the edge, no f holes, etc.
I hope I never have to get inside this one again. If I do, I may just take your advice, greenblues58, and drop it off with a pro!

I've got a shallow hollowbody with f-holes and I can't even fathom trying to swap out electronics on a hollowbody without f-holes. It's such a PITA that it took me about 8 years to get around to replacing a volume pot that cut out on 10. I probably should have just paid somebody, but I was pretty proud of myself once it was done.

If I ever swap pickups in my 339 I will be paying someone to do it. Strat, Tele, Les Paul no problem. Don't feel like messing with if in the semi hollow.

Eddie, Getting ready to tackle my Eastman 186 thinline, but it does have f-holes. Still not looking forward to it. Thinking of doing the same on my 186. Tone pots are fine, but the thing goes to mud as soon as I roll the guitar back from 10. Thinking of doing it myself, but will likely drop off to have a pro do it.
