So I made the drive through about 90 miles of western Wisconsin country side yesterday to La Crosse, which is always pleasant as long as you don't spend too much of it behind some dude on a tractor, to pick up my new R8 (see above). Get down to Dave's and as usual I'm treated like a welcome guest--didn't see Dave but Laun was there and took good care of me. Brought my guitar out from the vault--or wherever they keep stuff on layaway--and opened up the case, and ka-POW, I was in love. Great look, light as advertised (8.2 lbs, no chambering), and perfectly set up--plays great, love the slightly chunky '58 neck, which is maybe a shade slimmer than LaWonda, my other R8. A couple of the sales guys came around to have a look and said nice things--apparently Dave had been in Nashville in January and hand-picked a bunch of tops, and this was one of them ("It's basically a '59 top at a plain-top price," one of them said). Also they told me Gibson's planning a big price increase (again!) later this year, so my timing was good. It hurt me a little to let go of my Black Falcon, but it was sitting in the rack unplayed--I love the aesthetics but it needed some upgrades (pickups, bridge, locking tuners, Bigsby adjustment) to really make it a player, and doing that stuff would reduce, not enhance, it's trade/resale value, so I think in all I did the right thing. Also traded my Firebird, so was cool but enough of an oddball I don't think I'd use it a whole lot, and I wasn't in love with the pickups on it, either. SO--90 miles back home, plugged her into my rig (you can't ever tell much, playing them at store volume though whatever amp)--and wow. Both pickups seem to be low-ish output, wound to replicate vintage tones. Sweetest, most musical neck humbucker I've about ever heard--very impressed--could use a bit more bite from the bridge but it's a perfect tonal match for the neck pickup, so I might just raise it a skosh and see if that doesn't do it. In all, very pleased with the stock pickups and not pondering any changes. So that's the report--looks like in spite of everything Gibson's still making some good ones.

Congrats again Jon! I'll bet raising that p-up will do exactly what you're aiming for.

I've had to do the same type thing recently and again....completely understand!!! Congrats on the sweet new Gibson!! Enjoy!~

Thanks, guys. Really enjoying this guitar. Frank--yep; I raised it about a turn and a quarter on both sides and it spits and snarls like anything now with some gain applied; still sweet and musical without.
The one chilling note about this whole experience was the news that Gibson's planning yet another price increase. Still trying to max out the boomer $ before we all retire and go on fixed incomes, apparently.
