I've had my Galaxie for a couple of weeks now and I love it. I've found both channels sound great, but I'd love to have a separate bass knob for each channel. I'm all over the place with sounds. I do blues, funk and heavy rock sounds (which the Galaxie seems to do all 3 great).
Here's my issue. To get that real nice clean sound on channel 1, I've been dialing the bass knob down (almost bottomed out). But to have that good driving overdrive tone on channel 2: I've been running the bass knob at the 10:00 area. I'll likely use channel 2 much more than 1, so I thought maybe I'd try to use something to pull some of the bass out of channel 1 (keeping the bass knob set at the 10:00 area).
I've read through some of the old threads on Z-talk and on other forums and found that some people are using EQ pedals to remove bass from their clean sound. I also was looking at the HBE Detox EQ pedal. That looks like it might work nicely on Channel 1.
Does anyone have any input or experiences that could help?
Thanks ~ Roger

Hey Roger, Interesting question. I've been pretty steady in tone-control placement when using both Channel 1 and 2. Mostly with Stratocaster/SG/ES339/SC245/H150 guitars and maybe a coupla others Typical settings for me have been Bass @ 11:00, Treble @ 11:00 Volume @11:00 (and Presence @ somewhere between 10 and 12 o'clock on the non-MV combo when I had it ....) I get what you are saying about wanting to have more or less of the bass control ..... everybody got their own tonal requirements You are probably on the right track with an EQ pedal ... if'n I was trying to focus more on the highs, mids or bottom end - or even dialing-out some frequencies, that's where I'd be heading .... dependent on guitar/pickups/speakers/etc that you already using/favoring .... not sure I answered you question .... but hope it helps cheers always, Joel edit: keep in mind that I use a Dr Z 210 with Z10s and a Dr Z 112 w/ V30 ..... played the heck outta both of 'em to break-em-in ......

Thanks for the input Joel! Sounds like you have some nice guitars. I'm good with guitars too . I usually use a Les Paul, Strat, SG or 335. Yea....I guess I'm still in the experimenting mode. I've been bi-amping with a EL34 boutique (Marshall-Plexi style) amp for a few years. I've used a Fender Deville for my clean sound for a while and my ears have just got used to that sound. The Galaxie and the EL34 amp sound great together. My overdrive sound is the best I've ever had. It's just a wall of great tone and puts a big smile on my face. The reason I bi-amp is cause the clean sound on the EL34 amp is less than good. Plus I love the sound of a 6L6 or 6V6 amp too. I started messing with a clean boost on channel 1 (for both amps) and it helped the tone quite a bit. It's not quite a Fender black face tone, but it's a good tone none the less. Seems like pulling a little bass out and adding some sparkle on the top sounds pretty good to my ears. I know the Galaxie is more of a tweed sound which I really like. I just really like that black face sound for funk stuff. I debated over getting a Galaxie or EZG-50. Now I think I'll eventually have both amps....LOL.

I see where you're going and see why you'd want to bi-amp for the blackface'ish clean spank. All good suggestions. A less expensive route could be an xotic RC Boost to cut some of the bass and add sparkle to Ch1??? I usually started the gig on Ch1 getting drive tones from pedals and would use Ch2 for boosting leads . By the end of the night I was always on Ch2 relying on the guitar volume control and pedals for boosting creamy smooth leads.
Glad your enjoying your Galaxy. A very fun amp to play.

Hey Drew, I've been reading good things about the RC Boost. It must be a nice pedal. I haven't had a chance to try one of those yet. I've got a few good overdrive pedals and I tried them on Channel-1. But to me the tone didn't compare to the amp overdrive sound on channel-2. I have the MV mod, so I've been running the channel-2 volume relatively low, so it's not a crushing overdrive and I've been using a Fulltone Fat Boost to add more drive for big rhythm and lead sounds. I messed around with an old Boss GE7 EQ pedal on channel-1. I've had that pedal since the 80's and never got rid of it. I can be a hoarder sometimes . Anyway, I pulled some of the bass down on the EQ and scooped a little of the midrange out and found that nice funk sound I was looking for on channel 1. Now I just need to find a clean boost/EQ pedal. I was looking at the EarthQuaker Tone Job pedal (or something in that neighborhood). I like that it has a mid adjustment knob.

I don't know how good you are with a soldering iron, but I came across this diagram when I was looking for a passive bass control you could use. It's similar to the one found in G&L Legacy guitars, and it is very cool. One capacitor across the tone control pot turns it into a passive bass filter...here's a link. I'm thinking about putting a piece of it on the tone control for the neck pickup of my Les Paul to control the mud. PBT for guitar
EDIT: I just watched to the video clip and his tone is awful. At least on my little PC speakers. But I have this same thing on my G&L Legacy and it works very well and sounds great...so don't judge the idea by this clip!

Thanks Dave! Yea....I don't think I want to try that. I've kind of changed my approach with the Galaxie and mostly I've been using Channel 1 with pedals for different stages of gain. I'll still change to channel 2 for a real heavy part or solo.
