I'm new to the forum. I've been reading the forum for a while and researching on getting the right Dr Z amp for me. I thought I'd finally post since I got me a Galaxie head over the weekend. It sounds awesome so far.

Welcome to the forum, and congrats on your 1st Z! Which version is it and what are you running it through?

Thanks Steve and Baconator! I got the head model with the MV mod. I've only ran it through a 1-12 cabinet so far. I'm going to experiment with some different cabs and speakers and see what sounds the best, but is also easy on the back.

Welcome to the forum! A lot of good people and information here! You've been lucky to pick up one of the favorite amps of many people on the forum! My combo has a G12-65 in it - sounds great!

Thanks Mike and Richard. I read tons of posts on the Galaxie and it was hard to find anyone with anything negative to say about the amp. Even people who had got rid of them, seemed like they got another or regretted selling them. Plus i've always dug channel switching amps.
My 112 cabinet has a Jensen C12N 50 watt speaker in it. It seems to be a great speaker for clean sounds but sounds kind of fuzzy to me when I throw the volume and overdrive to it. I might try out the G12-65. Is that what came stock in the Galaxie 112 combos? Thanks, Roger

I believe it is what came in mine - not sure about other combos. Mine is a little unique though.

Welcome Z Talk! A 4x10 is a real cool cabinet with the Galaxie. Enjoy!

Welcome to the forum and congratulations on picking up a Galaxie. The G12-65 is what came with my combo and is a great speaker for the Galaxie. If you're into volume, the Galaxie thru a stock Z-Best is an amazing rig. There's a lot of versatility in those knobs.

Welcome! You picked a great amp, and I have yet to tire of mine. There have been countless times that I have just lost myself in the tones available.

Thanks Bill, Drew and Steve! I've been reading the speaker threads. There's good info there. Oh the options!
Do you guys run your cabs open back? Seems like the Galaxie has plenty of bass. I've tried a couple closed backs so far. Thought I might try to open the back up on a cabinet and see what that sounds like. I've always heard Fenders (or Fender-ish)amps like open backs, Marshall-ish amps like closed backs.

Welcome to the forum, Brother! I'd run it with an open-back cab if ya have one!

Welcome aboard and congrats on your new acquisition. Galaxie is a phenomenal amp. I've owned both the non-Master and MV models - love 'em both. Love the dual channels..... but spend most time on Channel 1 iirc, the 12-65 was the stock-standard speaker in the 112 combo. and, personally, I like to stack the Galaxie on a 112 (V30) and a 210 (Z10s) .... cheers always, Joel

I've always heard Fenders (or Fender-ish)amps like open backs, Marshall-ish amps like closed backs. There's some good wisdom in the Fender Open back and Marshall closed back. Then comes the Galaxie, IMHO it's part Fender tweed (big part of Channel 1) then on Channel 2 it's a revved up Marshall JTM'ish sound. I've ran with 1x12 open back, 2x10 open back (Z 2x10s) and a closed back Z -Best and a Dz Z 4x10 cab. The 4x10 is nice but was too much for me to haul around and was very loud. Overall for portability and volume I liked an open back inefficient 1x12 ceramic speaker. It's hard to go wrong with the Galaxie. It likes most speakers and cabs and effects.

Welcome Roger! Excellent choice, if I may say (My Galaxie has the MV mod too). Sounds glorious with a Z 2x10 convertible cab (open back). 8)
'Big Boy Pants' definitely needed for Galaxie Ch 2 (not just with the Antidote)!!

Thanks Joey and Alan!
I love convertable cabinets. I have a 1-12" and a 2-12" convertable, plus a split back 4-12". I've never tried a 2-10 or 4-10 cabinet. I'd love to try those models out.
I'm new to the smaller rigs......I guess it comes with age (with age comes wisdom and a bad back too). Back in the day I always used Marshall heads with two 4-12 cabinets. Now it seems crazy to drag all the equipment out to a show. Plus I never got a good clean sound (that I liked) out of a Marshall. I'm going to experiment with the cabs and speakers I currently have and I'll report back what seems to hit the sweet tones for me. Thanks for all the advise guys! I'm glad to hear that the Galaxie gets along well with so many cabs!

So......I put a an old Celestion G12T-75 in my 1-12 cabinet and experimented with open or closed back. The open back sounded much better. I know that's a generic speaker, but it sounded pretty good. I'm stoked about trying more speaker combinations. I used it at band rehearsal last night and the Galaxie really cuts through!
