I just received a G10 Greenback from a fellow Z bro. He said the speaker only had about an hour of play on it. How long will this speaker take to break in?

It may break in in stages. I have a gold I have been working. After about 5 hours it started getting better but hasn't changed much in last 5 or so hours. I would guess between 20 and 40

Howdy,
Good question. That means my 'Blue hasn't been properly broken in yet. I'm so embarrassed!

Thus may be a little tough to read, but here is a link to speaker break in/info in Aspen Pitman's book (highly recommended if you like reading about amps and how they work)................scroll down or click thru the pages till you see the 'New Speaker' sub title..... books.google.com/books?id=N9hAviH6gqEC&pg=PA163&dq=tube+amp+book,+new+speaker+break+in&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0CC8Q6AEwAmoVChMIjOC71NzdxgIVCDKICh1f7QYA#v=onepage&q=tube%20amp%20book%2C%20new%20speaker%20break%20in&f=false

15 minute break-in? Hmmmm. Who am I to argue with the industry "gurus" but, that just isn't going to cut it with me. I've always needed at least 20 hours of a 60hz sine wave plus a half dozen or so rehearsals or gigs to really get a speaker to sound like it should. I think they are more concerned with maximizing the speaker's longevity than how it sounds.

I've always felt that intentionally "breaking in" a speaker does more to shorten it's life than to actually make it sound much better. My policy is to load it up and play it normally, but I know that's not what the "boutique majority" think.

I like to get to the place that the speaker is going to sound as soon as possible. I typically set them up with music playing for 20-30 hours. The red fangs I have I put 40 on. There are enough variables to consider without the speaker being a moving target. I've never had a modern speaker die... So shortening the life isn't much of a concern.
That said, I have a detached garage/shop, so I don't have to hear them breaking in.

If not, then I use my 60 hz burn in to speed things along. I don't think it hurts anything because I haven't blown or otherwise damaged a guitar amp speaker in decades. But then I don't run them over 3/4 of their rated power.

Anybody know where I can buy a variac'd Celestion Vintage 30? I can't handle that speaker when new, but I know they get sweet with age.
