Hey DRZ, are there prototype versions of the new/updated Z-Luxe out there on the street with gigging artists right now? Just curious... I know the Antidote & Therapy got passed around incognito for a while--but not sure if you'd do this for a "reissue", of sorts?

I would like to release this amp with as full support as possible ( website section, demo, manual ). But as for now I'm still waiting on special orders to arrive.

Cool--thanks for answering, Doc! It's not like I'm trying to get my grubby li'l hands on a pre-production one.. but I'd be interested to hear an early demo, like you've done with Dave Baker, David Holt, Mark Lee, etc. Looking forward to it when you do!

Doc, you've told us the appx. weight (which really sounds promising) but have you solidified the combo cab dimensions yet? Just anxious to see what size category it falls into as well.

Just wondering, if the new amp's chassis is the same size as the old one, then that means it should fit the MAZ amps and the rest of the models that size. So will that cabinet be standard or an option on those amps also?

^ I'm pretty sure the old amp's (the JAZ) chassis was the same as the EZG-50, which is wider than the MAZ and other amps. Doc mentioned a new & lighter cab for the Z-Luxe & EZG... so I would guess those 2 are going to remain on their own common chassis.

Z's website lists the JAZ head at 22" and the MAZ at 19. I recall measuring them once. JAZ and EZG are the largest chassis in the lineup.

That's right. I haven't had my JAZ out of it's road case for a while and although both it and my MAZ are in the same width cabinets (22.75" outside) the JAZ chassis is indeed wider. Wishful thinking on my part.

Haven't noticed it mentioned, but what sort of tremolo will be in the new Z Luxe?
If it were bias-vary, I could be very interested (like the Vibro Champ or Princeton).
Opto? not so much...

Opto? not so much... This is the description of the JAZ tremolo: Full bias modulating output tube tremolo is on board as well. Output tube tremolo gives you a depth not heard with pedals or opticoupler circuits. You get deep pulsating swells of tremolo from the JAZ. Whether you desire slow and mellow or faster Bo Didley sounds you can dial it in with ease via the speed and depth controls. Pretty safe to assume Dr Z has stuck with this approach. It is a great tremolo sound.

It is a great tremolo sound. Yes that is true Mike. Also I have tweaked the Trem. circuit to instant start, no slight delay as in earlier JAZ design. Tough to have the Trem. start fast as well as run very slow do to higher cap values in the oscillator.

Is the instant start feature something that can be retro-fitted to the original JAZ? Is it just changing the values of some caps?

Great to hear Doc! I have a 1960 tweed Fender Vibrolux, and it has that slow turn-on of the trem. Slightly irritating but not a big deal for me. Not sure why the VC doesn't have that same delay? Thrilled to hear it's bias-vary; I don't care for the opto circuits, too choppy! I've been looking for a home-friendly amp that has the trem of my Vibro Champ, but larger speaker and no boxiness. Any idea of cab size, weight, and price range?

If it is a 2X10 combo the width will have to be practically the same as the original even if there is a change in the chassis dimensions.

I got back from a short business trip yesterday, so my wife and I decided to go out to dinner. We had a fine meal and a couple glasses of wine each. For some reason as we're walking to the car, I mentioned "I have a bit of a quandary." She inquires. I reply "Well, Dr. Z is about to release a new amp. It's based around one that was discontinued a few years ago. I've been a big proponent of the discontinued amp. I use it at [filled in with several gigs she always comes to]. But this new version is supposed to be smaller and lighter, so it might be perfect for more of my gigs. But I don't really have the space at home for another amp." She says "Just buy it. You can figure out somewhere to keep it." Mrs. Ice is pretty cool. And, no, I did not plan in advance to bring this topic up after plying her with food and drink.

I tried that on my wife this weekend and she said it could sleep in the bed next to her, but that there wouldn't be room enough for me and the amp, so it was my choice... Now what do I do???
