Hi, I traded my Maz38sr NR head for a Z28 yesterday. I wanted an Amarican voiced amp. The Maz is great, but i didnt like the sound of it (more vox tones). I had to do extreme EQ settings to dial in the tone I wanted. I know its all about taste, but when I played the Z28, man it just blew me away! It was love at first sound I'm playing on a handbuild Stratocaster from 'steffsens' or a fender tele 52 reissue (modded). Now im wondering what speaker will fit me best. At home i have a V30, sounds good, but sooo loud. I cant reach any breakup with this one. I'm gonna try my celestion g12h30 anniversary tomorrow and see how that works. Maybe combining those 2? Or do you guys have other speakers that sound good on this amp? I heard a lot of good stuff from that celestion gold, but thats a pretty expensive speaker to buy without trying... All tips are very welcome, and I'm glad to become a Z addict! tnx!

If you want something less loud than the V30, you might try a Creamback or Greenback; less efficient=less loud (look for the efficiency rating: 100dB or more=loud, 97dB or less=not as loud). The Z-28 is loud for a 20-watt amp (Z-watts!); I generally run mine with a Brakelite, typically on 2 or 3 clicks. And yeah--if what you want is an old-school, American-voiced amp with gorgeous mids, the '28's your baby.

Congratulations. My favorite Z model even though I had to let it go recently (see my "the cat that ate my last Z thread"). I had mine for many years and my favorite speakers were all Weber US voiced ones (12F150, 12A150, California). The Gold was the nicest non-US voiced speaker I tried with it. I will probably buy another Z-28 one day if I don't wind up with the new Z-luxe.

I had a 12H30 in since I got mine. Then went Gold for a spell before dropping in a 12H55/ greenback in and loving it. I like all three in the amp but love the ability to drive the green and get some nice tones.

My history is similar. G12h30 -> gold -> greenback.
Happy with the greenback these days.

Tyvm for the tips, I'm gonna check the 12H55 out... After i tried my G12H30. Altho I'm not a big fan of v30 I bought one cheap second hand and use it for home practice. The Z28 sounds killer on that one already so I cant wait to try some nicer speakers on it! I'm guessing this honeymoonperiod ain't gonna stop

I'm interested in Doc's new Eminence design--might be a great match for the '28.

Maybe the minority but I'm with you on this. I just happen to prefer the Weber versions of those Jensen models.

If you are looking for American-voiced speakers what about Eminence Red, White and Blues? In the new Z luxe doc is using Z-designed Eminence speakers to get that American voiced sound.

The new Z-28 video uses an eminence speaker. I understand it will be the stock Z-28 speaker.

So Mike, WHAT is the "new Z luxe"? I've been away from Z-Talk for a while - guess I'm missing something... It's a slightly reconfigured JAZ 20/40 - 42 pounds in a 1x12 format. New Doc designed Eminence American voiced speaker, a footswitch based "boost", revised reverb plus some of Doc's magic dust. As good as the original JAZ was this sounds even better to me.

Hey Jon - They are both American voiced. Hard to say how similar they are - my RWBs are in a Z-best versus a 1X12 combo.

First, let me say congrats on your new Z-28. Been a huge fan of the Z-28 for a long time. 8 years and counting with my Z 112 cabinet and its original V-30 ..... stacks nice with my Z 210 and its original Z10s .... If I was gonna stray - I'd be looking at a Z-best with V-30 and H-30 .... or p'raps a pair of Greenbacks or G12-65. I do understand that you are probably looking at speaker options for a 112 cab ... but the '28 certainly excels with multiple speakers ... imho cheers always, Joel

I love Eminence speakers. They do take a while to break in. I use either a 1x15 Legend 151(very American tone) or a 2x12 Legend GB128 (greenback style quite close to a creamback). The 2x12s are becoming my goto cabinet, great clean tones and on 333 setting you get a little Marshall vibe. Once in a while I will use a 1x12 Red Fang(alnico). The Red Fang brings out some voxy chime so that may not be for you. The Z-28 sounds great with all three.

When I had my Z-28 combo:
It came with a greenback. I initially didn't like it. (mostly based on heavily airbraked volume) Swapped it out for a G12H30. I figured the '28 is a mid heavy amp (or can be), so a scooped speaker would sound better in there. I had a few gigs with the H, and it was too much bass. I needed the bass knob turned up for added drive, but it caused too much bass tone. I was using a tele with low output pickups. If I dialed back the bass knob, the drive would fall off.
I put the greenback back in there. Perhaps not the best speaker/amp combo for the living room....but for gigging...it's the right combination. (for me at least) I also appreciated the lower efficiency of the greenback.

^ Wow, John, even in an open-back combo? I didn't think you were a fan of the greenback in open-back.
But yeah, the Z-28 can tolerate a WIDE array of speakers.. it's probably the most speaker-friendly Z-amp I've played. I really liked it with a G12H-30 Anniversary for a while, until I replaced that speaker with a Tone Tubby 40/40 Ceramic (which, strangely enough, is like a "better" G12H-30; much different feel than the AlNiCo tone tubby, by the way). The 40/40 has become a really versatile heavy-magnet speaker for me.

As I'm getting older and crankier, I like the greenback in anything.

That must be why the 1-12 Combo comes with a Greenback.

I hear/read a lot of good things bout the greenback... Altho I really like the g12h30 on it atm (much better then my V30). Always tought those 2 (greenback/g12h30 anniversary) where a bit simular to each other... Guess not? Man, I really love this amp!
