I have the same guitar in the trans cherry, looks like a SG that got mixed up on the cutting table. But i also love this one over the others. the tone, feel, way it hangs and fits me is ideal. the dimarzio hb's are sweet too.

I would get somebody to completely strip it and give a light clear finish. This will open it up.

I would get somebody to completely strip it and give a light clear finish. This will open it up. The way CA does their guitars is to avoid any of the epoxy fillers, just a light sealer. Then, thin paint and super thin nitro. The guitar is absolutely alive in my hands...point is that it's already amazingly open and resonant.

Don't forget.....
Painted bodies.....are usually painted....for a reason. If the wood is really figured and beautiful....chances are, it would NOT have been painted a solid colour and hide the beautiful wood.
If you sand it down to bare wood....it will probably be a boring wood and not look really great as a transparent red.
You might get lucky, but builders are generally pretty logical. Save the good looking stuff for transparent finishes...and take the boring/ugly wood for solid colours.
That has been my experience over many refinishes.

I have a guitar that i love to play but dont always love to look at. I bought it because, frankly, it is the best playing guitar i have ever held much less owned. It is a Campbell American Transitone in surf green. Again, unbelieveable player with amazing tonal range but i just dont love surf green. I've been toying with the idea of having the guitar stripped and refinished in say a trans-cherry or something like that. Otherwise, i may just sell it which i hate to do. its one of those guitars that you literally cannot put down... anyway, wondering if you guys had recommendations on who might tackle a project like this? I posted a pic just so you could see the guitar. its funky and wonderful all in its own way.
Is the finish Nitro? The color goes with the retro look of the guitar. You'll be sorry . You very likely will change the tone to some degree. Maybe try a turtle shell pickquard or something that would set the green off differently. Why consider selling guitar you say makes you a better player? That makes no sense. The color is that 50 to 60's automobile color. JMO

Do it. Your subjective reaction to the aesthetics will always cast a shadow of doubt on this guitar, no matter how well it plays. I wonder if CFW could use the surf green as a base coat and build up transparent layers of a metallic flake - probably would need aim toward a darker color in blue or green hue.

thanks everyone for your input. after talking to a number of credible sources, it looks like the best price to get this done is around $600-$650. I'm not afraid of that, but dont relish it either. Its kind of like cosmetic surgery, do i get that nose job or just stick with what ive got???
on balance, i think im just gonna leave it alone for now. may decide to do the refin at some point, but for today i guess i will just stay where i am at.
