I have recently stuck 5751 in v1 of my blues jr...its sweetened it up some...much more tolerable.Im able to open up the guitar volume a little more and the strat really like's that...as well as my other axes.
I have gone back and forth with my maz 18 studio/nr with the "5751" cause I felt i need the extra sumtin w/12ax7 gives...but to my hearing...having the reg/cab/reverb model (in comparison) to the studio nr,the reverb model just seems more laid back and not so in your face as the NR 18.It really does soften tone up nicely...but
Just wondering if anyones gone with it (5752/v1) and stayed with it and found it has plenty to back up...even with mr heavy hands drummer.Thats why my reluctance to stay w/5751 v1.

I no longer play out more than a few times a year but I've found that I prefer the 5751 to the 12AX7 in the first preamp slot of most of my amps that call for a 12ax7. There are a couple of exceptions like the normal channel of my Super Reverb which sounds better with the 12ax7. I play mostly clean and the 70% gain factor suits my ear better for most things. I had a 5751 in V-1 of my Maz 18 NR for almost the whole 10 years I owned it.

I'm torn... I just got my MAZ18NR 2x10 recently and first I put in some soviet 6p14p poweramp tubes... that tamed the amp a fair bit (less distortion, less volume) and gives me MUCH better resolution in chords. It sounds a lot more 3-dimensional now.
Then I put in some NOS Phillips 5751 in V1 and V2 and even though I really like how the MAZ sounds on its own, with the whole band, it doesn't cut through as well as it did with the stock JJ ECC83S. I don't mind the lower gain because I get all the overdrive I need with humbuckers into the Lo input (I like my guitar sound to just barely break up) but somehow the top end is a bit too smooth now. Dialing up the CUT does help but I'll have to do some more testing with the whole band to see what stays in there.

When I was gigging my Maz18 (reverb) I tried NOS 5751 in V1. I didn't care for it. I felt the 18 reverb had enough clean headroom with the 12AX7 for my purposes and the 5751 took away some of the "drive" , so to speak. Not knocking the 5751 , just my experience YMMV.

I also ended up going back to the ecc83s/v1...this is in my nr/model though...I think the 83 just adds some luster to tone...

Years ago, I was a young electrical engineer at GE. I had a few older engineers as mentors, and they got a kick out of the fact that I was using tube guitar amps. So, one of them brought me in a bunch of their old tunes. I tried the 5751s in my Marshall and really liked the focus that they brought. I think that I've been using them ever since although the Marshall doesn't get much work these days to my Z's. I never thought of trying them in my Z's.
