It's been a while since I was here... Just got back into a Z via trade. Forgot how much I like this amp! Anywho... Just got a Maz 18 NR head and the Dr. Z 1x12 cabinet... the one I picked up is loaded with a Celestion Heritage G12-65 currently. I'm tempted to swap this out as I'm having to crank the mids, treble and cut to get the sound I want...
So I'm going back and forth between the Celestion Alnico Gold and the Celestion Heritage G12H (75hz).
Mostly play indie rock-ish stuff with a clean-ish/slightly dirty sound with occasional heavy dirt. Occasionally a lot of delay.
Therefore, which one would you go for? Is there another speaker I should look into? Should I stick with the G12-65?
Thanks all!

The gold is the tops, I have the same set up as you but with a Vintage 30, great clean tone, balanced and full. It responds to dirt extremely well. I love it.

I just tried a friend's Maz 18 with my Z 1x12, loaded with a Hellatone 60 (broken in Vintage 30). Sounded great. Have heard many good things about the Gold, but haven't tried one yet. Also, my friend is using the new Hellatone A25 alnico with his Maz 18, and it sounds excellent as well.

Gold should be standard with this amp.

The Celestion Vintage 30 is Doc's standard speaker in the 1x12 cabinet - for a reason. Don't overlook it.

The only speaker I'm not too much a fan of in the Maz is the V-Type, a buddy of mine has one and it lacks the thumps an 18 usually has. It's a very clear speaker but the thickness is my favorite part about the amp.

Went through a whole bunch of speaker swaps in my 18 NR combo and ended up keeping a Chinese Greenback in there. Found everything else too harsh including a gold. 2nd favourite is a Heritage G12H 55hz very similar to the greeny but more low end.

Go to the WGS speaker website & listen to the audio clips of the Liberator. It's an 80 watt speaker w/ an $80. pricetag. I put one in a maz18 studio size combo, and it's stayin....

^^^^Def check out WGS. They offer great value and tones.. Ive tried several speakers and ended up with WGS ET65. Im putting one in my DRRI as well. I did have the blue in the Maz and that was my second favorite. The gold was too bright and metallic sounding for my ears. ( I sold it quickly). Call the guys at WGS,, they might be able to guide you.
I order 6 speakers from different vendors so I could have my own speaker shoot out. Good Luck

+1 on the ET-65...I've had one in my MAZ 18 combo for a while now. I've tried the Gold, a WGS alnico, a Jensen, and a couple of different Eminences after never bonding with the stock G12H30, and the ET is a great match with the MAZ IMO.

I have the Celestion Blue in the cab I use for my Maz 18 most often. You cannot beat a well broken in C-Blue for crystal cleans and a sweet top end. A very loud and articulate speaker but not harsh. I pair it with a ceramic (black shadow C-90) and I get the best of both worlds.

If you want to stick with the 1x12 format get the Blue. If you want the sound of heaven the Blue and a G12h30 in a 2x12 open back cab is king.

Gold was too bright and fizzy when pushed, blues didn't have enough bottom, as stated above, the WGS ET-65 is the best speaker in the Maz I've ever tried and I've tried them all

+1 on the Gold. It has to be broken in. Mine is not harsh or fizzy at all.

And a +1 for the V30. Great speaker. But... It has to be broken in! Really, if a V30 is harsh, you haven't played it hard enough!

Used to be G12H30 was the go to speaker for this amp and it is to my ears a great choice. Its also the speaker shown in the combo on the Dr. Z website.
Add C-Blue to the G12H and your done!
That's been my Maz giggin' set-up for years.
