Benttop can you do some tests with the amp overdriven?? I'll take that under consideration.

I would also like to hear the test overdriven. My guess is that the results will be the same though.

With the amp cranked full up is where I hear the biggest difference in attenuators due to the added harmonic content of the signal. Give it a shot.

Nice clips Steve. I gave up on my Airbreak and sold it after it failed to retain the original tone of my 100 watt Marshall 1959 SLP. I really want to try it again now. I wonder if mine was defective somehow? The more attenuated the Marshall was , the more the tone changed from clean to distorted.
Anyways, now I really want to try it again and do some recording to make sure I am not crazy!

It may not be the attenuator you're hearing is all.

Yeah, hopefully I will get one again soon. I would love to try some A/B tests and use the Airbreak on some other amps and cabs.
I know the Airbreak can sound good- in fact, I would like a do-over! I need to make sure the AB is 100% functional and every other piece of the puzzle is in perfect working order and hopefully I can get back into using one.

Wow, those are tough to tell apart- you can hear some very subtle differences, but I don't think they could be enough for me to ever complain about using attenuation. Sounds really good- thank you for posting these! Love the Rx.
Every so often I hear something that reminds me to quit obsessing over gear and play my guitar...
Thanks!

my fave settings were the 3-4...just a bit more hair and richness to the note, again , could be just my ears too. The differences were subtle but a bit noticeable too

OK the links were broken on this post from 2007, so I've updated them and you all can experience the joy of my mangled playing style one more time.
If you're wondering about attenuators, especially the Dr. Z design, this should open your eyes a little.

I remember when you posted this link to univalve.net. I had "forum envy" at that point. The amp envy steadily built up.

DC here!
First of all great job Steve - and thanks for undertaking the time to do it.
( yes it may not be totally scientific - who cares )
Second: Listened to the clips in my iPad with a pair of Beyer Dynamic DT990 headphones I could not hear any difference at all first. Just checked my hearing the other day - I hear bass and treble just fine the middle frequences like 200 to 500 hz much worse about three times worse.
Third: I thought your playing improved through the clips 😎 Lols
Any ways good experiment and interesting discussion Cheers: Dixiechicken!
