I sold my Stangray about two weeks ago, but when I had it, I used a Creamback. Make sure it's a creamback "M", the high powered greenback. Not the "H". The "H" will sound terrible with the 'ray. When I sold it, the buyer came to my house, and I had the the 'ray sitting on top of my Avatar 1x12 loaded with the creamback. He loved the tone, and bought the amp. But he called me the other day, saying he hasn't been able to get the tone I had in my living room from any of the cabinets he has. I told him it was his speaker choice. He's working on getting a pair of greenbacks. The 'ray will sound good with anything in the gold/blue/greenback camp. To me, the creamback M is the perfect speaker for the 'ray...if you want ceramics, or if you can't tell the difference between ceramic and alnico, and don't want to spend the extra money. Also, as compared to the blue/gold...the 3db drop is MUCH needed. It helps curb the loudness of the amp. Pros: Tone, (lush mids, less bass) and that fantastic 3db drop. Cons: None that I can think of. (unless you're a big alnico fan.) ------------------ Edit: I see in your signature, you have a 'ray combo. Years ago, I had a 1x12 Stangray combo with a gold. Incredible sounding, but LOUD. Too loud for club gigs. And I really don't like squashing too much with an attenuator. I feel if you have to use a LOT of attenuation, you have the wrong amp. The creamback was not out yet, so I sold the amp. Here was my first gig with the old 'ray combo Nice big stage...I started off with no attenuation and it was still TOO loud. Put a creamback in that combo and you'll be set!

Thanks John....I was thinking the "M" and not the "H". I appreciate all your info. I have a Stang Ray 1x12 combo with the Gold...and I love it.(All 66lbs) I'm getting a 2nd Stang Ray head very soon and thinking I'll get a 1x12 cab for a lighter rig. Then...my future plan is to switch from Stang Ray head and Therapy head into a 1x12 cab. So I was debating for the 1x12 cab either Gold or Creamback "M". Thanks.

Update! I now can say the Ray with a Cream back is really great! If I'm playing where I can crank it up...the Gold is the one...but on Sunday's or in a small venue the cream back spk tames the Ray just enough. The Cream is a great speaker with the Ray. Thanks All....

I use a 2x12 cab w/Creambacks, and it's hard to beat. A broken-in Gold 1x12 is amazing though...

Glad the Creamback is working out for you. I was pretty sure it would.
Anyone who likes the Gold...but feels it's too loud....should try a Creamback.

Had a Ray and matching 2x12 open back Z cab loaded with Blues. IMHO, the Ray was meant to be played through Blues. Broken in Blues sound much ballsier, "broader", and open than ceramic speakers. Just my $0.02. A former pic of the amp family with the Ray proudly displayed: The Ray from the back (notice the 10awg speaker cable - like a fire hose): Front shot:

Nice stuff. Brother.... What is the tweed on the right? Clark Tyger??? Yes; Clark Tyger. The one on the left is a Victoria 35310. Very very different amps, though based on the same 5E7 circuit. The TopHat is a mystical script logo circuit 50w Emplexador. Unobtanium - took me five years to find one; that head box is when Brian Gerhard at TopHat was making the transition from script logo to block logo. At that point in time, it was still a scripty circuit (you can tell by the control layout). Bangin rig.

Just my $0.02.I think I recall reading the Ray was designed to be played with 2x12 Blues. And the Zwreck combo of a blue and gold is probably the best I have heard. That said... I LOVE my Ray with a 1x12 Gold. "broader, ballsier, and more open". More than the cream back. The cream back "M" just has a nice "rounder", 3db less volume...(thanks John)...for the smaller gigs. nice to have options...
