So my youngest wants to learn how to play a mandolin. I have no experience with them. I've tried to tell her the guitar is a better place to start, but I think she's still firm. Any thoughts or ideas?

Interesting choice. I have one and enjoy it, although I by no means consider myself an old hand at it. I think Trinity has some nice models, as well as others at a moderate price. My old bass players son took it up and went to Berkeley school of music. He learned some phenomenal pieces of music. Has she been inspired by a mandolin player?

I don't know any specifics but she likes Bluegrass. She wanted a banjo or violin at first.

I started on violin at 9 & the best part of that is the manodlin is tuned the same but w frets so it's easier to learn IMO. Reading music on either is great and they make learning guitar much easier, too. Good luck w it!

If she's self-motivated and learns well from watching videos online, check out the Artist Works site and the mandolin lessons with Mike Marshall. She can upload videos of herself and have Mike give feedback. I signed up for the site for a year and learned a good deal. I picked up mandolin mainly to learn just a few specific tunes, but I got a good deal from the Artist Works site. artistworks.com/mandolin-lessons-mike-marshall

And for her listening enjoyment, David Grisman is a great player for inspiration in that direction.

Just snagged one from the emporium here. Anxious to get started (blank slate). I wanted something for acoustic jams... There's always a dozen guys that play guitar... Figure it might also help my right hand accuracy.

One quick note about Chinese mandolins...this might sound Unbelievable....but there is a grand total of ONE Mandolin factory in China. ALL import mandolins....no matter what the name that's stuck on it.....are made in the same place...by the same people.
If you like one....buy it.... but unless you are buying an American made mandolin...ignore the name.
