What I'm getting at is you have a gig coming up. You make a mix for your phone/ipod/CD whatever your medium is and you put your favorite music and songs that inspire you to be your best. What's on it?
I have a huge (to me) gig Saturday night. I'm playing MY tunes with MY trio at an all original showcase locally. Sure, it's not LIVE @ the Fillmore but it's an opportunity to share what I create with a receptive crowd. I've spent the past month thinking about how I'm going to play the show and what I want to relate musically. To that end I've been listening to players that have that (insert french accent here) je' ne se quoi? ( i doubt I spelled that correctly. Spanish was my forte being 1/2 beaner)
Anyhow, I love Jimmy Bryant's playing. Junior Brown comes to mind as does Freddie King. All those gents played within the song and yet exhibit this wild control over the "edge". They sound like they could fall off at any time but manage to steer clear of the cliff and do so with such vigor and taste I con only think to imitate them is to respect the song as a nun does silence. Follow?
So here's my list of jams I kick when I want to be inspired. In no particular order:
Jimmy Nolen on the JBs and the Flames- Popcorn
Jimmy Bryant- Arkansas Traveler
Junior Brown-Long Walk Back to San Antone (live@the continental club)
Freddie King- San-Ho-Zay
SRV-Texas Flood (live @ the El Mocambo)
T-Bone Walker- Tbone Shuffle
Grant Green-It Ain't Necessarily So (best 10 mins of your life tone wise)
There's others but those are the ones that jump out to me as of this moment. Share yours b/c they mean something to you and are the pinnacle of our expression when we grab the guitar flip the switch and plunk out the melodies from the six strings that hold the promise of creation and the audible translation of our emotions.
