Is there a general timeline on how long a NOS preamp tube should last? I know each one will vary from one to the next but is there an average? Hundreds of hours? Thousands? Just trying I figure out how many I should have in my reserve.

Years and years and years. I have some that I got in the 80s that have been run regularly since then and they are still going strong.

^^ Yep…..my understanding is that they either work or don't….unlike power tubes that definitely wear down over time/use.

I used to run preamp tubes back in the '70's and '80's for 4 hours a night, 4 nights a week, for about 2 years. Do the math. I don't recall ever having one fail. I just changed them as good maintenance practice. They were cheaper and easy to find then also. I'm sure you could run them much longer than that. Phase inverter tubes need to be changed more often. Probably every 500 hours or so to get the most out of your power tubes. That's just my opinion.
