Been trying to get the feeling of this amp here, and discovered that my Grosh Bent Top Custom likes this amp just fine, thank you! Most notably, with the amp wide open, but the guitar turned down to about 5, neck pup, the amp just has a very cool clean sound. I must have played it like that for two hours last night. Of course, when you turn the guitar up, the amp breaks over and gives up the goods. I had the Overdose off on this clip, and the guitar in the high input, with every knob all the way up. Oh, also had the Hot Plate in the circuit set to -12db. You'll hear where I turned up the guitar about 2/3 of the way through. This amp has a very cool sound with this guitar, I think. I could see using this in some "real" recording projects, along side the Stingray and the SRZ. In the interest of full disclosure, I used some compression in Sound Forge to push the levels up during mastering. RXES_Golds_BTCustom.mp3

Very nice licks, you managed to get that elastic chewy kind of sound only available from el84's.I signed up for this forum from the very begining but I seldom post. That being said I really enjoy listening to you and the other guys play.I'm going to make more of an effort to be more vocal in the future.Looking forward to hearing more great stuff......Sterling

Very sweet indeed! Sweet singing Guitar and RXES- That kind of clip puts a fire under your feet and makes you want to play - I have been interested in an RXES for a while now, but think the wattage is too high for me - How does it sound or interact with the guitar at lower volumes w/ and w/out pedals? Matt

Matt Thanks Matt. I actually haven't tried any pedals with it yet, because it sounds so cool without. About the only thing I've been doing is A/B'ing with other amps. And yeah, it's a tad loud - you may have noticed I used a Hot Plate for that clip. -12db is a lot to cut, and it was still loud enough to get some of that interaction between the guitar and the amp going on. But it wasn't as loud as I would probably play it live - I'd probably bump the Hot Plate up to -8db or use the Airbrake on a similar setting. Actually live the Airbrake would probably be more versatile owing to its smaller attenuation steps. All that said, this amp has a cool enough clean that I could use it without attenuation in a live setting if I was just using it for cleans. If you want the dirt you have to crank it up.

Thanks guys. This is really bizarre... I just listened to my own clip on my pc speakers, and the mix sounds entirely different from headphones or my studio monitors. On the PC speakers the guitar so so far in front of the music you can hardly tell there's any background there! Wild. Fine for a clip I suppose, but that just demonstrates why good studios have boom boxes around. For something important, you would want to play it back on every conceivable setup to see where things are. Fascinating stuff... Oh, and give a listen on your headphones... ;D

-12db Wow. That's a whole lot of attenuation. I love my RX, but sometimes I wonder if it's just too much amp for me though. There's still no way I would sell it. Great tone, and great playing as well. I've never been able to get my RX to sound like that. Great bite and articulation, and great "slow burn" phrasing throughout. There's even a really cool bit in the middle somewhere that reminds me of Jeff Baxter's solo on the Boston Rag. The whole solo is like one big build-up. Well played, sir.

I assure you, any similarity to Jeff Baxter is purely by chance! But you have pushed a button here! I'm fixing to go on a big ol attenuator rant, thanks! The thing is, unless you have an attenuator, you cannot really explore the full capability of your amp. After all, how many times have you had your full set of controls dimed? That's pretty hard to do with this amp if you don't have an attenuator in the circuit. Unless you're on stage at a huge festival, it's more likely the neighbors will call the police and complain about the racket. But with an attenuator, you have the tools to explore the full suite of sounds available from your amp, and if you find that it sounds best to you with the volume wide open, you can run it that way every time, regardless what listening volume you need. I think attenuators are the greatest tool we have available, because it converts an amp from ok to fantastic, just by turning a couple knobs. There you have it!

These clips are making me think twice about selling my RxES...*pondering*

Well keep one thing in mind. Yeah, there were Alnico Golds in that clip. There was also a great Grosh guitar with Fralin Blues Specials, an attenuator that let me run the volume wide open, and any number of other factors. The old saying “Everything Matters” applies in every case. ;D

Great stuff, as always Steve. That's a mighty fine souding guitar. The amp and speakers really show off the tone of the axe and the player.

Very sweet tone and tasteful licks man! I heard one note that had some real nice natural sustain... I'm leaning more towards a 66, but your post has got me all messed up.

Thanks guys! Had to go back and revisit this one myself since it's a bit old. The thing is, I'm becoming more convinced than ever that all of the Doc's amps have great tones in them. I've had five (so far) and every one of them was a major tone monster. They ARE all a bit different, yet all very characteristically Dr. Z amps. I actually want a couple more myself, but having a hard time with where to put them all. I sure appreciate your kind words.

Gosh Steve, that is really, really good tone. REALLY good tone. Very sweet. Nice playing too. I love your vibrato. Now bare in mind that I have a pretty nice Grosh guitar also, ;D If the RXES Jr can cop a tone like that at a reasonable volume, it will be a must for me. A nice aquisition to go with the 66 as they are very different and some el84 tone would come in handy for certain gigs/projects. I'm sure the Goldies have a lot to do with it too.
Not sure how I missed this first time around. Great stuff.

I've wondered about the Webers myself. I have two of the ceramic versions and they don't sound much like the Golds at all, but I think that would be expected. I wish I had ordered Alnicos now, but of course, they cost a lot more.

Hey Steve, I was listening to this clip again and really love the tones. I'm curious, for your live gigs these days would the Stang Ray or RXES get the lions share of the work?

Hey Steve, I was listening to this clip again and really love the tones. I'm curious, for your live gigs these days would the Stang Ray or RXES get the lions share of the work? Depends on the venue. When I play with the Classic Rock band, I actually use the Stingray more because most of the junk, er.... crap...er... "music" we play sounds best with a pretty clean guitar. But I switch over to the RXES for higher gain work and solos. For [glow=red,2,300]BIG FAAAAT CLEAN [/glow]solos, I switch both amps on and turn the guitar down a little to clean up the RXES - talk about a FAT clean! If I take a blues gig, I am struggling to decide between my tried and true Flexi-50 and the RXES. Like 'em both, but they are way different. Still not gigging the SRZ - but maybe soon.
