I've got a Fender Hot Rod lll 1x12, the issue is at any volume no matter how quiet it's distorted but it's a gross distortion, real trashy, it's never clean. Also, all the bass is gone from the amp. Any ideas or starting points?

My first guess would be power tubes. Then preamp tubes. If you have a spare 12AX7 that you know is good sub it for the first one. If it sounds the same put the original back and try it in the second. Then to the third. If that doesn't fix it try new power tubes. I started with preamp tubes because they are cheaper, but what you describe sounds more like power tubes to me. You might also try spraying out the input jack and the efects loop jacks if it has one with deoxit. Make sure your speaker connection is good. Also try another speaker to make sure the speaker isn't fried or plug that speaker into another amp.

Are you plugging straight into the amp or is there a pedal board in between? Along with what Marc suggested, check your board and cables as well. I've gotten some funky tones when I had a bad patch cable on my board.

There's a board between but I played the board last night through a friends Blues Jr. and everything was fine, so it's not board/pedal/cable related. I'll check the tubes.

Pony up and get all new tubes and I bet your problems will go away. I replace all my tubes every year and have never had an amp fail at a gig. If I have not had any problems with the old tubes, I use them as spares in my gig bag. You will have to re-bias your amp but that is easy to do or better yet let a tech do it. I have a weber bias rite that is easy to use and if I can do it anybody can do it. There is good advice here from the doc on how to trouble shoot your amp. Good luck.

Sell it and buy another Z. Haha!! Right?! The amp is actually a frends, I took a screen shot of y'alls advice and sent it to him, he removed the tubes and sprayed out the sockets. The amp seems to be working fine now, he bought new tubes and is going to have it retubed when he gets a chance. As for the new Z, he had mine for three months while I was in CO through the summer and now has the bug pretty bad, I think he leaning towards the Therapy.
