A friend just got himself a new Grosh Bent Top Custom, and I hadn't played mine for a very long time. I'm having so much fun with the other Grosh I almost forgot how great this guitar is. I wish I had put new strings on it (these are at least six months old) but it was definitely making the Stingray talk to me. Here's the setup: Grosh Bent Top Custom (neck pup) > Stingray > Airbrake > Celestion Alnico Blues (Airbrake was on -4 clicks) Stingray was set as follows: Cut: 6 Tone: 4 Volume 6 Guitar was in the high input Here's the clip - all the standard disclaimers apply. What a cool tone.... To be honest, the Stingray hasn't been a big point of interest for me. But that's one of the coolest tones I've heard from one so far. Not that the Stingray's not a great amp...It's certainly a remarkable design. I just tend to stay partial to the MAZ sound (which I guess is from growing up around vintage Fenders.....)
What are you mic'ing with?

What are you mic'ing with? I have two Rode NT-1's here. One is about three inches away from the right speaker, off to the side (you can hear the close mic on one side) and the other is across the room at about 6 feet in the air pointing back towards the amp. I like the two mic technique because you get some room in the mix, but also you can use your balance control to listen to the two different methods. Yeah, that guitar into that amp definitely makes a cool tone. That's why I turned on the recorder, even though I hadn't intended to. I figured I wouldn't be the only one to appreciate it.

A friend just got himself a new Grosh Bent Top Custom, and I hadn't played mine for a very long time. Okay, I'll come clean...I'm the offender mentioned above. Very nice "wankage" as usual, Steve! I'd expect nothing less from ya. Man, I need to quite buying guitars and amps so I can afford a nifty digital recorder for spontaneous moments such as this. Then again, it would probably wind up like my camcorder. Let's see...which closet did I stuff it in? Ray K.

Holy Moley Steve. That's excellent from start to finish. Tone and picking. However, I didn't need to hear that!!! I started gas'ing for a stangray, post RXES acqusition. The Evan news calmed the Stingray gas but now you've just thrown a heap o'fuel on the fire... ;D

Here's a great example: preview.tinyurl.com/yho3kj. Admittedly, this is the low-bucks entry point, but this thing will record directly to MP3 files that you can copy to your computer. Then all you need is a place to put them to share... By the way, one of the tools I use for live recording work can be found over there at B&H Photo and Video: preview.tinyurl.com/y7vapa. This unit is a bit more expensive, but wow does it ever make great recordings in the field. Since it has two XLR inputs with phantom power, you can take along a set of good quality mics and get really great live recordings. I've used mine innumerable times here, not the least of which are all the times I've used it at practice.

No kidding, that is cheap. But where are all the buttons and knobs? You know I've spent a long time learning how to use the buttons and knobs...so where are they, huh?! ;D That is nice looking, but does make my wallet hurt. I'll let you know when I decide to get serious. I actually do have an old cassette multitracker, and I do know where it is. It's taking up valuable real estate in my music room. I just never think to press record when I'm sounding like I know what I'm doing. Thanks much for the information. Ray K.

Cakewalk's Guitar Tracks Pro 3 is cheap: www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Cakewalk-Guitar-Tracks-Pro-3?sku=704988That's what I use. It's great for doing sound clips & playing along with backing tracks. I don't even use an interface. I just plug the SM57 straight into my Sound Card. I've even done some guitar tracks on some demos with it that way. Someone shoots me an MP3 of their demo, then I play along & add tracks. Then I burn the WAV files of my tracks onto a disk, and they can import them in whatever they are using (Pro Tools, etc.) You can, of course, fine pretty cheap interfaces (like M-Audio) if you want to do more with it.

Hey Steve, I just relistened to this clip, and it has to be about my favorite yet with the StangRay. Tell me, were you using any boost pedals or anything like that in the chain on this one, or is that really the type of drive you can get out of the amp alone? If that's just the amp, it will be perfect for what I play. Thanks

The Grosh Bent Top Custom has Fralin Blues in the neck and middle positions (that was the neck pup you heard) and I have the Alnico Blues on that amp. But yeah, that's what the amp sounds like with the volume up at 6. That would have been pretty loud if not for the Airbrake. By the way, there's more grind up above 6 on the volume knob, but the volume starts to taper off from about 7 on up.
