Humbucker has 10" cabinets with a Ramrod or an Alnico Red Fang. I plan to use the cabinet with a Z28. Which speaker should I get?

I used a Ramrod in my z28 combo with good results and found it to be quite versatile. I've heard a lot of the people on the Forum say that the Red Fang is loud almost to a fault.

I've heard of lot of the people on the Forum say that the Red Fang is loud almost to a fault. I'd be one of those people! The fang is a very loud speaker. That could be good or bad, depending on the application. For me, it was bad, so I replaced it with a speaker that wasn't so loud. But there are many others on the forum that like that speaker. No experience with the ramrod...sorry, can't help you there.

The Ramrod is definitely "loud for a 10-in. speaker" but not to a fault like the Red Fang 10 might be (as John & I both seem to feel). The Ramrod is good all-around, but excels at the higher-gain stuff in my opinion. I have & love mine in a Monza 1×10 combo.
If you're considering mid-gain/overdrive or cleaner stuff, I like the more-versatile (and much quieter) G10 Greenback for that; and that's what I'd recommend 1st to pair with a Z-28.

That's probably why the greenback is standard in the 12 combo.

I have a RF in my Z-28 combo and you'll have no problem cutting thru the mix with it. I'm going to be looking for a Gold after the first of the year.

I swapped out my Ramrod a couple of months ago from my Z28 combo to another 10" cabinet I use with my Mesa TA15 and replaced it with a Celestion Gold, mainly because I had the bread.
The Ramrod is a good speaker (so is the Gold).

I have the RF in a Ghia combo and like it for it's clean headroom. 1 vote for the RF!

I have a Ghia head with a 2x10 and am looking to downsize to a 1/10. I use pedals for distortion so I guess I'm looking at as much clean headroom as possible. Red Fang be a better speaker for me than the Ramrod? How about the Gold?

If I'm not mistaken, John (above) replaced his RF with a Gold. You can see his comments on it. I believe the RF is about 3db more efficient than the Gold.

I've got a Ramrod in my Mini Z combo, and I really like it. It really sounds bigger than it is. Not loud, but big, fat sounding, full. Has great overdriven tone, and a very nice clean voice too. Cranked in the Mini, it is really nice. That's where I spend most of my time with the Mini, is at 3:00 and above on the volume with the attenuator on click 3...but like I say, on the rare occasion that I do turn it down, 8:30 or 9:00 sounds very sweet too. Can't say anything about the Red Fang, I've never had the pleasure of hearing one.

I don't own a Z28 but according to past Z Forum posts, the Red Fang may not be the best speaker with the Z28. Both are low-mid heavy.
I would get the Ramrod IMHO.

The Ramrod is a good option for starters with the '28. If you want more old school rock I'd get a greenback in there. For modern rock/country etc the RR will do fine. The Red Fang isn't a horrible speaker at all however, with a Z amp an efficient speaker goes more than a long way. The RF has a big middle and the '28 can be too much through it especially when it's peeling paint and the volume's only at 10 o'clock.

I like the Red Fang with my Ghia. I did not like it with my Z-28 for the reasons Christopher mentioned. Both were set up as 10" combos.

Well, I ordered a Monza instead of a Z-28 because I could not find a 10" combo in the color combination I wanted. It comes standard with the Red Fang. I'll let you know how it works out.

I've had a couple of players spec Ramrods in old Fender amps that I have refurbished for them. I'm a big fan of them. I like Doc's 10"s in my JAZ but if I had to replace them I would seriously consider going with Ramrods. They seem to be a very versatile speaker.

RF fan .....have a pair of 12's in a THD cab...killer sounding...also good in full openback config...I don;t find them overly loud, compaired to say a Tonker, which was LOUD....MAZ38NR has great MV to cool down volume...I am a fan of emi not so much celestion...

I took my Monza with the Red Fang to a jam last week. All the house equipment was microphoned except for my Monza and it kept up just fine.

while I have owned and own all 3, the redfang is an amazing speaker, as is the Ramrod, however they have to be properly broken in or you may chuck on down the road before really getting a true tone and opinion of . I had the RF's in my Fender SR and being an already LOUD AS hell amp it was the tone to die for but didnt help me get the amp to its sweet spot quicker lower volume etc.... But nice gritty cleans TONS of BOTTOM almost 2x12" tone coupled the 2 with 2 Ramrods, allowed them to be broken in for over 3 full days while at work, sold all 4 to purchase another 1x12 Cab, then loaded my Super w 2- GOLDS yes just 2!!!! They were not as good as the REDS I HAD! Fang/Rods , until I broke the Golds in PROPERLY!!!! With the 28 I would go for the REDFANGS or a combo of FANG/RODS!!!! True American TONE!!!!! The GOLDS are really good but depending on what your going for may not be best.

The results were mixed, but Humbucker advised me to go for the Red Fang. Thanks for your input!
