You old timers on here may recall I posted this clip a while back. For those newer here, This is a song I wrote and used my old 2002 Ghia head through a old sq. Z 1x12 with a V30. The ghia was pretty cranked, I backed off the guitar volume for the rhythm track then went back and did the fills, stabs and solos with the guitar volume wide open, no effects at all, one take for each guitar part and then one take on vocals. No real mixing and done in a buds home studio about 1 1/2 years ago. The guitar was a JV Strat, nothing but a cord between the Strat and amp so you get a good feel for a Ghia on blues with a cheap guitar and an average picker. Features "Stoner" Garlitos on drums and Ed "Turtle" Tejeda on Bass, the rest is me It's called "She's Gone"The other tune "Leavin' Texas" I also wrote and do vocals and the rhythm parts, all the lead and slide are Alex Hemphill through the same ghia.......no so fond of the tones for Leavin' Texas.. a lil to distorted..but again..All Ghia. Forgive the clams on these one take demo's. Curt www.soundclick.com/bands/pagemusic.cfm?bandID=436481

Yeh thats what the Ghia is definately capable of. No frills killer tone there Curtis.
It's not your typical EL84 sound. The Ghia seems way thicker than any other EL84 based small box,I've played bad cats, matchless lightnings and other high end stuff and the Ghia just kills them for simplicity and killer tones available very quickly. For small intimate gigs you won't need anything else. Well done for taking the time to put some stuff up for us there mate. I love mine and won't part with it. Had it for over a year now and the love affair hasn't ended.

Excellent tunes, Curt. Nice playing.
Do you remember a while ago someone (tas maybe) asked if a ghia thru blues sounded like a AC 30, it really doesn't, does it?
I love the rhythm track on "Leaving Texas" Did you use a dirt box, or were you givin' er' to the ghia?

I can definately agree with that in saying the Ghia and a celestion blues don't sound like an ac30 or even an ac15 for that matter. I think you have to look at a number of factors, not just the EL84 power section. The power transformer, tube rectifier(5y3) and the 5751 preamp tube play big factors. The Ghias layout is way simpler than the Vox's. I think the Ghias tone is also way more "smokey" and more suited towards blues than the Vox's which seem to have more chime. I haven't played a Maz jr but I'd imagine this to be a closer Vox tone than the Ghia on some settings. I've even heard some people say the Ghia is like a baby Route 66' tonally even though they are totally different internally.
For what it's worth it one kick arse little amp! I have just had a Eminence red white and blues arrive yesterday ready for another Z' I want to buy once it comes up on Ebay and have yet to pick it up. I know it's a bit of an overkill but I'm going to hook it up to the Ghia and see what it's like tommorow. I can't wait!

T'was my first studio experiance hence the rushed intro's etc No dirt box, Straight in to the cranked Ghia, I used my '52 RI with a Duncan stacked STK-3 in the bridge so it's more like a bucker when full out. The engineer wanted Sabbath ! when he heard that assending progression in the chorus...not exactly what I had in mind when I wrote it...but live it keeps getting heavier..why fight it ?

Yep Jaye, your a young "Old Timer" Dang, I guess that also put me into the old time catagory! Nice tone and playing Curt. These clips were instrumental in my ghia purchase. It's the only amp I've not sold or traded. Thanks for trip down memory lane. I'm playing the ghia at a non-drummer rehearsal tonight. I can't wait!

'Old Timer'), I had forgotten that, now that you've had your Ghia for awhile do you think these are accurate Ghia/Guitar tones? What I mean is do you hear similar out of yours when cranked? I posted these to steer perspective Ghia buyers to what the Ghia can or can not do since the question is asked so often and it is an amp that is incomperable IMO..

Yes, I think they do accurately represent that cool ghia tone. In my experience differnt speakers and cabs make a world of difference with the ghia. My latest and fav is a widebody 3/4 back cab with a weber blue dog alnico 50w speaker. Nice.... I've not had the opportunity to try a Celestion blue or gold alnico.
