Hey guys,
I've had my Maz 18 NR 2x10 combo for a few months now. I absolutely love it. Traded my Monza head and Avatar 1x12 signature cab loaded with a creamback (closed back) for it. I am a worship leader and play a lot of different genres outside of church.
My Maz is loaded with the Doc's 10s. They are LOUD. I would like to tame the loudness as well as help tone down the uber bright tones I'm getting. I'd like to get back to the warmer more lush sound I had with the avatar cab. (I understand it will be hard as it was a closed back cab) Has anybody played around with different 10s in their maz? Because of money restraints I would most likely just be replacing one at the moment but what would be a nice combination of 10s or would you stick to a pair of the same. (I mic up on 99% of gigs so different flavors are nice some nights) Any advice would be great!
Obviously there are more ways to get what I'm looking for so if there is a different way to get what I want by all means let me know. Also, if I decide to sell 1 or both Z 10s what is a good asking price for them?
On a side note, I just bought a flight case for the Maz from Safe Case Co. If you're looking for one they are about as cheap as they come and build quality is out of this world. Even got mine customized with the Z logo on it.

The 10" Greenbacks sound really good. Definitely a warmer tone, and should knock the db's down noticeably from Doc's 10's.

I had the same issue with the Doc's 10's, so I went through a lot of the 2x10 reviews here and would up getting a Weber Blue Pup and a Silver Ten - both 30 watts as apposed to the Z's 70 watts. I mainly got it for my Z28 but the Maz 18 I had for years sounded great through it as well. I bought them here since Weber never responded to my emails. speakertone.com/

Thanks so much! I'll definitely look into those!

What a killer price too! I'm guessing you did the alnicos and not the ceramic?

I'm in a very similar situation but I didn't change my speakers out. I have the same combo and I play it regularly in church. I also mic mine. It's true that the volume can be tough in that situation. However, for me, I also wanted the volume for other gigs outside of church so I went with a Brake Lite and also turned my combo away from the congregation. It's off to my side and angled towards me. I use a floor wedge for a monitor. So the Maz comes through the P.A. via the mic and I use the amp itself as my guitar monitor with none in the floor wedge. The rest of the band is in my floor wedge. I'm able to get the tone I want and still feel the amp. Our sound guy is happy because it lowers the stage volume and he can control my house volume from the board making for a better overall mix.

Most everything I play outside of church I'm mic'd. Stage volume isn't an issue at church as we use IEMs and mic our amps offstage. I really don't need the volume that these bad boys put out. Some of the sweetest loudest speakers I've ever heard just not what I'm looking for in my application. I have looked at the brake light but I'm looking for that warmer bottom end I used to have. Running my bass knob maxed out and just feel there is a better way to attain what I'm looking for. On a side not having my dry vocals direct in my ears as loud as I want for as many years as I have used them makes me cry at the sight of wedges. Don't trust myself vocally with them anymore.

I've played my Maz at church for years now. Use a stand-back stand angled up at you pointing away from the congregation. We also use a plywood blocker with some insulation to keep sound from projecting out the rear of combo amps also. That will keep your soundman happy. The Doc's 10's were to loud for me. Go with the Greenback 10's, it's a perfect match and you will knock a ton of DB's off. I eventually converted mine to a 1x12 baffle, went with a low efficiency wgs ET-65 and have never looked back.

Just recently purchased a Maz 18 Junior w/reverb 2/10, I play church gigs and club gigs and was hoping to cover all my bases with an amp that is responsive at any volume Other gear is Fender DRRI, Tone-King Imperial and a Fender Vibro-King which is loud and heavy. Guitars are American Std Strat , Tele, PRS cu24, hoping for a good palette for tonal Control to accommodate the different styles of music Inplaybon a weekly basis. Hope the Maz 18 does it for me!

I've been studying on this myself. Right now I've got the celestion g10s in it but I tried putting a z10 in it. It added a bit of fuller sound than just the g10 but like you said very loud. I am wanting a fuller sound so I may hafta try some of these speakers mentioned.

I think a Brake Lite might be what you're after rather than new speakers?

I'm snagging some warehouse green berets for mine. I'm hoping they're as good as the celestion green backs. Anyone on here running those in their maz Jr?

Any update on this? I'm very happy with the 10"s in my MAZ but you know – never stop tinkering!

I've really enjoyed the green berets. I've used them live 4 times and have been pretty pleased with the sounds I get but I think I'm gonna switch one of em out to another speaker of the same wattage, etc to get a little more complex sound. Until I decide on which I'm very happy with the green berets. It still needs a brakelight or sir break to get got break up. With an air brake I can get great overdrive at pretty low volume. Haven't tried a brake light yet.
