When I think of that "Fender Deluxe" sound, I always go back to these 2 sounds: Pete Anderson and Eric Johnson's clean tone.
My EZG gets those sounds, but I'm considering going to a JAZ combo for convenience, smaller wattage over my EZG head and cab.
Does the JAZ do these? Thanks!

The JAZ will do the hot-rodded DR sound in spades. Also one of the reasons I just recently sold my 1965 Twin was because my JAZ will get close enough to that sound that it made no sense to own both. That EJ clean sound has as much to do with his stereo chorus as it does to the two Twins though.

Are you thinking about picking up one of the originals or waiting to see and hear the revised JAZ the Z has mentioned?

I might be trading for another forum member's Old Edition JAZ Combo. EJ is using deluxes in the video I linked to. Stereo defintiely helps with that lush effect and fatness. I guess ultimately what I'm trying to find out is, does the JAZ sound like a smaller version of the EZG?

I don't have an EZG and have never played through one so I can't help you there. From what I understand though from Dr. Z's description of the EZG as an "improvement" (my word, not Mike's) the main difference is that the low end doesn't crap out like it does on a BF Fender when the amp is pushed. The mods that Pete Anderson had done to his DR's also does the same thing. So if that is what you are after but in a more stage manageable package then yes, it will do that. The master volume does a really nice job of taming the amp down as long as you don't go below about 1:00. By using that and running a speaker attenuator at -3dB's I've never had situation at a gig where I was too loud yet the amp remained responsive. This is all at the 40 watt setting because I don't really care for the 20 watt one. Other players have better luck at 20 watts so it must be because I haven't spent enough time working with it that way. You'll have to mess with the tone controls though because they don't act at all like a BF Fender.
I've heard that EJ sometimes uses DRs but I've never seem him play through those. I've seen him 5 or 6 times over the years at different sized venues and he always had Twins. Even the last time (where I was on the sound crew) and the audience numbered about 400 people.

I guess ultimately what I'm trying to find out is, does the JAZ sound like a smaller version of the EZG? I think zpilot covered the JAZ in relation to Fender BF well. I do have an EZG, and I would not say the JAZ is a scaled-down, i.e., lower power, EZG. I'd add that Dr Z seems to have had the Super Reverb sound in his mind when designing the EZG. The JAZ tilts to the DR and Pro Reverb zone. My view, fwiw, and I should note that I do not have a lot of experience playing vintage BF amps. If jj (gotmojo) sees this thread, he might add his observations. He had a JAZ and is familiar with many vintage Fenders.
