I'm playing mostly indoor, smaller venues - range of music goes from classic to modern country as well as Fogerty, Blackberry Smoke, etc - nothing crazy heavy. I'm running my Maz18 NR head through a Z-Best 212 at the moment. I love the sound, but I hate the carry...heavy and awkward. Regardless of inside or outside, I mic, so I'm just wondering if I'm really just destroying my back for nothing lugging the sweet but monstrous Z-Best around. Maybe a convertible 112 with a nice alnico in it would be a more sensible option, but how much would I be giving up in tone?
Thanks.

I have predominantly used a 212 cab over the years. I have a Zbest cab as well and used to use it on a weekly house gig where it stayed in place so I didn't have to move it. It's a great cab for sure, but I can't imagine lugging it around week in and week out; just too darn heavy. Well, maybe if it was in a case on casters... At any rate, I moved to a 112 Zcab this past year and I couldn't be happier. I figured I would not like the 1-speaker setup vs the 2 12's. But, I was pleasantly surprised. I really haven't noticed a significant difference. The 112 delivers the goods in spades. And the smaller size and lighter weight are so nice. I recommend trying one out.

The Z-Best is a beast. I love the cabinet, but as you noted it's more than a notion when it comes to hauling it. I save it for certain events. I love my Maz 18 2x10. I have a combo and a convertible 2x10. Just saying don't rule that option out.

I actually had a 210 before, j4 - definitely regret letting it go. There's a 112 on the market here now for a decent price - strongly considering it.

Sounds like the Z best is overkill for your playing situations. I second the recommendations on the 1x12 convertible cab.

I'm playing mostly indoor, smaller venues - Yeah, what Roscoe said. Sounds like it's overkill. And you have a misconception that the Z-best is 'better'. Other cabinets will be 'different'. There is no official 'better'...other than what your ears want to hear. It's all in your head. However, if you're accustomed to that tone, then switching to something else (especially an open back cabinet) will sound very different...and you may perceive that as not as good. You don't even need an expensive alnico. My favorite speaker is the greenback. Nothing like a 1x12 with a greenback for me. (or in my case a creamback) The convertible cabinet is a good idea. Playing on small stages/venues: The open back allows sound to come out the back, bounce off the wall and fill up the stage. (which can be easier to hear on stage) Some people like this feature. More of a surround sound, where closed backs like the Z-best can be very directional and beam-ish.

bnads, what's in your Z-best? Is it the stock G12H-30 & Vintage 30?
I've felt for a long time that the Celestion G12 Gold mostly embodies the tone provided from the combination of those 2 speakers (good low end, nice crunch, and all-around wicked sounding). Plus everyone already knows the Gold sounds amazing with the MAZ amps. I think you'd like a 1×12 cabinet with a Gold in it... especially if you can switch between open/closed back and see what works best for you.

Get two 1x12 convertibles. Close one (with ceramic speaker) and leave one open (with alnico speaker). Then you have several choices that all sound great, including using both for the monster stack effect.

Thanks guys.
Yup - it's the g12/v30 set-up. I have noticed the beaminess - esp when we play without monitors. I'm gonna list it and go after the 112. It has a c-Rex in it now, but I'll try to get it empty and swap a gold in ;-).

Unfortunately the 112 sold last night before I could go scoop it up. There's a 210 in mint condition not too for way - focus has shifted there now.

The convertible Z112 with the center back piece removed and outfitted with a Celestion Gold beat out the Z-Best for me.

there is something magical about the 2x12 setup, the throaty cleans, the chunky chugga chugga with drop tunings etc.... I would invest in a Nice XCASE with casters, however the 1x12 with a GOLD will give you some mighty fine tones

Maz 18 with an open back Blue is a beautiful thing.
That's all I'm sayin'...
Except that if you add another 1x12 G12H30 to pair that with?
You're done, done, done and lovin' it: end of report.
I've been using that combination for a 2x12 set-up for years and haven't found anything to beat it.
'Course that's just one man's opinion: or is it...?

DC here!
I have Doc'd 2x10" inch cab with the removale backplate with my Route66. It's an excellent choice. 2 tens move more air than one 12"
plus I feel the 10" speaker are more percussive. I like that feeling.
I keep the backplate on most of the time. the frequency is more even that way The bass is tighter and lower.
Cheers Dixiechicken!
