I can't decide between a head with a speaker cabinet or a 1-12 combo. What say you?

I love combos but either way you want to be gentle when moving the '28 bc EF 86s can get moody and microphonic when manhandled. For gigging it's easier to have combo on cart w gtrs on my back for one trip in.

First, let me say that Christopher and I agree on a lot of things.
I think the way to go would be a combo. Mine happens to be a 1x10 with a Gold (that was converted out of a Z28 head), and it works really well for what I use it for. However, I think that the 28 overall sounds better with some type of 12 inch speaker, and there are many flavors to choose from. Sometimes I take my 1x10 combo, add a 1x12 Mesa cabinet and think that may be all I need.
BUT:
then I plug into my Mazerati v2 with one 12 or three 12s, and I'm in a real good place.
Suffice to say that just one Z amp may not be enough.

Get the head then get the Mather Studio cab ... best of both worlds

I learned a lesson on ef86 amps in combo format. I have two Matchless combos with ef86 channels. The issue is the amount of air that is moved/disturbed when the amp is turned-up to stage volume. In my experience, this physical movement tends to exacerbate the microphonics of the ef86. I have had a real battle finding a tube that has a VERY small amount of microphonic qualities. I am looking to unload one of these combos and will eventually replace with a head/cab setup. Hope this is helpful.

Mine is in a 1x10 with a Gold. Never had a problem with microphonics. The Mather 1x12 cab is a good idea though.

In my life, I've only had two combos, and they are long, long gone. I love the versatility of a head and cab s. I have cabs w/ British flavored ceramics, American flavored ceramics, British flavored AlNiCos, American flavored AlNiCos, 10"s, and 12"s. There is so much you can do w/ your sound/tone by just plugging into a different cab. You can even tailor your volume w/ the sensitivity of your speaker selection. 1X12 and 2X10 cabs are relatively light and compact. Having said all that, I am kinda lookin' for a 1X12 studio or 1X10 8-18 watt combo... just because...

I have a Z28 head but as son as I can justify the funds (or find a used one) I'm going to snag a Mather 1x12 studio cab. Then I can use it as a grab and go or combine it with my 1x12 cab for a bigger sound if I need it (which I doubt I will the way things are looking for venues around here).
When I was doing bigger stages a few years back I did like the versatility and easier transport of the separates though.

I'm with Joel on having the head with different cab options. The Z28 head is pretty light, so it isn't much of a hassle as far as weight is involved for me to grab both head and cab. Yes, it may mean 2 trips to and from the stage with amp, cab, guitar, and pedal board, but the benefits outweigh the extra trip in my opinion - and you'll still be loaded in or out before the drummer.
I haven't had issues with micro phonics either, but I have had rattle from the rectifier from time to time.
