Anyone ever try a Sovtek LPS 12AX7 in V1 of their amps?
I had a couple for use in the PI spot, so I tried one in V1 just for kicks. I like the way it sounds there. Very full and round to my ears. Check it out if you think you'd like more low end and fuller mids.

I tried it once but the one I had was microphonic in that position. I meant to try again with another one but never got around to it. Thanks for the report Eddie.

As long as it's within proper specs, I suspect it would sound quite nice (although I've never tried). However, if it's in a combo where there's high SPL's hitting against the tubes, the long-plate tubes can be more susceptible to microphonics. As it usually goes with tubes, though, YMMV.

about a year ago my son Michael and I did a pre amp tube shoot out with his Mini Z. Actually wasn't much of a shoot out, he had a tube going microphonic and we took whatever I have on the shelf down stairs and we tried a bunch of tubes. He was blind to the test so I just put on a thick glove and swapped out tubes and had him play. He picked out the Sovtek LPS everytime as his favorite. It was a little grittier than the other tubes and he liked that. my 2 cents, Todd

I used to use the LPS in V1 and V2 positions often when repairing amps and I never had a problem with them. I never heard any negative feedback from customers either. I quit using them there only because I read online that they tended to go microphonic. Also, JJ's were really reliable then and I liked the way they sounded. I especially liked the LPS in the first stages of amps that were mostly played clean, such as BF/SF Fenders. The LPS tubes that I have in my stock were purchased almost 10 years ago so I don't know if there is a difference in the current production.

My new Monza (built in 2013) shipped with those in V1 and V2, with EH EL84 output tubes. Not a big fan of Sovtek tubes, but the amp sounds as good with those as with some others that I tried in it. Go figure!

I always like a Tung-Sol in V1.
