I'm looking at purchasing a Les paul Special (with P90's) in a gloss black finish. I found it at a great price and I'm probably gonna grab it as long as I like the the feel and tone. The only problem I have with the guitar is the fact that it's gloss black... gross. Since it's a gloss, I figure it'll be a lot easier to strip than a satin finish with out taking off too much wood.... I gues I'm jut trying to figure out if it's worth it.
I'd love a nice TV yellow.
What do you guys think?

Nitro strips easily with a good paint remover. My only concern would be how much black got into the grain. TV yellow ("limed mahogany") can be a little tricky to apply. But a good pro should be able to care of it.

No real difference between stripping a gloss or satin finish. How much black will be (or not) in the wood grain depends on how or whether it was sealed first. As mentioned, the Reranch sire is chock full of info on how to prep and finish. Take it slow, follow the instructions, and have fun!
