Hi Everybody,
I normally run my KT-45 "full out" through a vintage Marshall 4x12 cab (I have two...one from '67 and one from the early '70's...both w/original Greenbacks). They sound fantastic...but are a bit of a pain to haul around. I'm kind of in the mood for a change (considered turning my KT-45 into a combo but from the advice I got it didn't sound like a good idea...unless maybe I could talk the good Doctor into a custom conversion)...wouldn't mind reducing my volume, tightening up the sound a little bit and cutting down on size and weight so I'm considering the Dr Z 2x12 Open Back Cab with 2 Celestion Alnico Blues. Does anyone know in what ways this would affect my tone and volume? [Speaking of volume...I have a Hot Plate....but rarely use it because even going down 1 or 2 steps seems to drastically affect my tone. Would Dr Z's Airbrake help retain tone better than the Hot Plate?]
Any advice is much appreciated!
Shawn

If you run your KT full out, the blues may not last long. You would be better off with the Golds or the Weber Blues or Silvers in 30 or 50 watt versions.

Ditto Kruzty's advice. Two Blues will get destroyed by the 45 (they are 15 watt speakers). Also, the C-Blue and its big brother the Gold are very sensitive speakers, so they are very loud for their wattage. If you really want to bring volume down a bit the Webers are the way to go. Those Celestions are too efficient.

Hmmm....howzabout maybe the Z-Best 212 loaded with a Vintage 30 and a G12H30? Or maybe a Z-Best 112? I've only used the 412 greenbacks closed-cab so I have no idea how other arrangements might affect the sound.
Thanks!

I haven't got a KT45 but have been jonesing for one since I bout my first ever "Z" about 2 years ago and from then on have studied every possible option with them.
If you love that British Hi-watt sound another option in a single 12 might be to try a Weber Alnico Thames model. They are based on old gray frame Hi-watt Fane speakers. They are rated at 60 watts as well, which could be a real nice match for your KT45 and available from tedweber.com for $190 plus shipping.

I just picked up a 6545 (KT45 & SRZ 65 in the same head).
I ran it thru the speakers in my Maz Sr first and it was amazing. Was a Weber Alnico Silver (50 watt) and a Weber Alnico Blue (50 watt).
Will be pulling the V30/G12H30 212 out later today. But, I'm thinking I'll be swinging for another 212 with the Weber Alnico pairing - amazing tones! And, a better route than the Celestion Blues with the KT-45 head for pure wattage reasons...they are rated a clean 45 watts and put out more when pushed to clip. Z's conservative with his ratings.

Thanks! Let me know how the speaker combinations compared to each other if you get a chance. Do you know if Dr Z can install the Webers if I order a Z-Best cab?

Well, as expected, the Alnicos were softer (less aggressive highs/more give in the low end), but had more character, more articulate, and nicer chime. They were also much quieter. Would say the Alnicos were more musical. Favors single coils a bit more. The G12H30/V30 were L O U D and pretty aggressive. Much brighter top end - more sizzle, and a tighter bass - more chunk. Not as much mid-range definition/content, but awesome for rock'n'roll guitar! Would be great for a rock band playing guitars with P90 or Humbucking pups. Great setup either way. I do think I like the Alnicos - but they suit what I'm playing these days...more pop and americana/country...and the lower output suits some of the rooms better. If I'd still had my rock band I'd go with the G12H30/V30 cab in a heartbeat. RE: Doc installing the Webers, I believe you can purchase the speakers from Weber and have them shipped to Z for installation - just make sure everyone knows that's what you want. Otherwise, it'd be just as easy to have the cab shipped to you empty with a wiring harness and have Weber send you the speakers - just drop them in yourself.
