For my not yet delivered Stang Ray, I'm toying with the idea of getting a 2x12 fitted with two Blues. I know people here have opinions about other speaker options but my specific question is with respect to the Celestion Blues. Would you get the cab wired in parallel (4 ohms) or in series (16 ohms)?

Doc says the old Vox AC30's were wired in series (16 ohms)...and they gave a slightly different tone than parallel.
What about getting two 16 ohm speakers and wiring them in parallel for 8 ohms? That way, you can always pair it with another 8 ohm cabinet for 4 ohms. And that 8 ohm cabinet can be use with most other amps if you want to experiment.

Thanks for the info John. I was thinking the same thing but the Blues appear to only come in 15 ohms, not 16. Would the mismatch of 0.5 ohms make a difference?

Should arrive by Xmas. At present, I have a 2x12 cab loaded with an Eminence 50 watt alnico (EJ1250) and a ceramic Carr Elsinore made by Eminence (60 watts). This cab is paired with my Carr Impala head. The Stang Ray may sound fantastic through this but I've got GAS for the Blues.

Can anyone tell me what ohm rating the stock blues that come in the 2x12 combo are? Mine came hooked up in the 4 ohm output. I'm assuming that means the blues are 8 ohms a piece wired in parallel. But I know the blues come in both 8 or 16 ohms.

For your combo, each Blue would be 8 ohms. They have to be given that it's connected to the 4 ohm output. Interestingly, a Blue comes in either 8 or 15.

I'm pretty sure the modern Celestion Blues are actually 16 ohms. I believe they still use the "15" on them, however, as sort of a nod to the past when they actually were 15 ohms.

I went with the two Blues wired in series for a 16 ohm cab. I should get both head and cab in about 3 weeks!

I'm thinking its a good thing you doing a series wiring.
The Stangray is a 30 watt amp and the blues are 15 watt speakers (I think that right anyway).
Series wiring will distribute the power over both speakers so as not to exceed their power rating.
Parallel wiring would put the entire power output on each speaker potentially driving them above their power rating and providing the opportunity for bad stuff to happen...
Doc put the Blue and Gold together with the Z-Wreck and I believe wired them in series with the Gold first for that reason. The Gold has a higher power rating so it provides a opportunity for it to "absorb" the load- sort of protecting the Blue.

I recently put the 2 blues in my Stangray combo and wired them in series and it's been great! I also got a fender reverb unit for a REALLY good deal! Add in some reverb and the Stangray with the blues really sparkles!!!!!!
Enjoy!

I just picked up my SR and 2x12 cab! It sounds so great ... as expected. I was surprised however to see that the head is equipped with four Electro-Harmonix EL84s. I always thought the Doc was using JJs?
