Been doing some research on small builder, booteek pickups. All the fashionable one have been looked at. Klien, Almifitano, Florence are a few I see mentioned around here. There are plenty of other great & bigger makers.
Anyway, I keep coming across Ron Ellis. Hasn't even got a website. Makes them part-time. A year or two waiting list. (pay first, btw). He has some heavy weights using his stuff...... Paisley, Fogerty, Becker, Funderburgh to name a few. (All have been known to sport Dr Z amps as well!)
I got in touch with him a couple of weeks ago and ordered a set of 50/60's Strat pickups with his "hot/fat" bridge. It will be a year or more before I actually see them. Call me crazy....I know. So...I found a guy that had a used set for sale. His mid-60's set will be here today. Obsessed I am! I love the pickups in my EJ Strat, and said they would stay....but..... You never know till you try!
Also pulled the trigger on NIB Ellis 50's B Tele bridge pickup last night. I will have soon obtained a little unobtainium....
Anyone have any experience with this elusive guy and his magical pickups?

He studied under Alan Hamel, who worked in the Fender Custom Shop before going off making his own pickups. Fred Stuart also makes pickups now and was also in Fender's Custom Shop. Same with John Suhr, etc etc. Stuart and Hamel competed of course and Ron worked for Alan before Alan quit and then Ron started making pickups from what he learned with Alan and on his own as I understand it.
I've heard nothing but great things about his pickups. He started out with Tele pickups and then started Strat pickups and as of late doing PAF clones in a Lee Roy Parnell signature set.
I would LOVE to have a set (Tele, Strat, or PAF), but I'm allergic to waiting lists...not because of impatience but rather no matter how reputable they are I'm always afraid of getting burned.

Taken from another forum:
Humbuckers: For the Humbuckers, I offer 3 different sets. The '57 LRP, '59 Betty's, and the '62 MHW (Machine Hand Wind). The LRP's have a beautiful feel, where the notes compress and bloom. These are very reminiscent of Duane Allman's sound, and typical to some of the earliest (of the good ones) PAF's tonal character. The Betty's are more like the later '59-'60 PAF sound, a little more fundamental and edgy on the pick attack, more in the vein of Page/Zep. The MHW's are the brightest and has the most presence of the 3 sets, these are more like the early patent # or T-top era pickups. All of the sets have beautiful touch/feel, clarity and separation, it just depends on what flavor you're looking for? I can mix and match up whatever combination you may prefer. I can make the sets with or without covers. I can do the sets in black/black, white/black, or white/white. The cover choices are raw nickel, polished nickel, mirror nickel, or gold mirror ($20 extra).
Tele’s:
For Tele pickups, I have different bridge and neck styles, which match up nicely in any combination. For the bridge pickups, I offer the 50 B (Broadcaster), 52 T (Blackguard), 50/60 T (Brad Paisley), and the 60 T ('60s style D/G raised pole). The 50 B is very dynamic, with a musical hair that surrounds the fundamental notes. It is a very authoritative sounding and feeling pickup, works well for rock, blues, yet still has its foot in the door of Blackguard Tele sound. Brad Paisley used this pup all over his Alcohol record, and on the song Alcohol. Fogerty has three 50 B's in his various Tele's. The 52 T nails the early Blackguard tone, it is cleaner and clearer than the 50 B, yet still has the beautiful compression, bloom and swell on the notes. It will cover any kind of music, from country, rock, blues, to jazz. The 50/60 T is a model I made for Brad Paisley, it has different magnets to cover a tonal range from early Blackguard to the 60's sound of Roy Nichols. A lot of the 60's Tele pickups can get brittle and harsh sounding on the treble strings, by combining different magnets, you get the bass response of the 60's era sound, along with the beautiful compression and bloom on the high strings. The 60 T is a raised pole (D and G) late 50's into 60's style pickup. it has all A5 magnets, but doesn't rip your head off, as so many of the original and aftermarket pickups do. It has more of an edge and bite to the notes, great for Haggard, or Buck Owens, to Keith Richards sound.
For the Tele necks, I offer the Standard Plus, Mid Tall, and Tall Neck. The Standard Plus is the most original Tele neck sound, warm, yet open and clear sounding. The Mid Tall is more open through the mids and top end, very clear and musical. The Tall is approaching a Strat neck sound, still has the Tele warmth, but a little more scooped in the mids like a Strat neck pickup. I can either make the T neck covers shiny new looking, or more of a played in/aged look.
Strats: For the Strat's, I offer 4 different sets.. the '54, '59, Mid '60, and the 50/60's. The '54, '59 and Mid '60 sets are exact recreations of the old vintage Strat pickups as they changed throughout the '50s and '60s. The 50/60's are a hybrid set that I created to take the best of the early '50s and combine with the '60s sound. They are very balanced and useable throughout the tonal range.
Pricing and Payment: The cost of the Humbuckers are $600 per set, and the single coil sets are $350. There may be additional cost for custom orders. For payment I accept PayPal, or USPS money orders. The PayPal fees are 3% in the US, and 4% International. The shipping costs will be dependent on the number of pickups ordered and the actual shipping weight. Full payment must be made at the time of placing your order. If you know what you would like to order, please send a detailed message to ronellispickups@gmail.com with exactly what you are looking for and be sure to include your shipping address, contact phone and PayPal email address. We will then forward a PayPal invoice to you for the total cost, including shipping and PayPal fees.
