Just bought a Maz 18 Jr with reverb, 1X12 extension Cab, Brake lite (stand alone version) and two custom made Studio Slips Covers, should arrive in two days, can't wait. Been a lurker for a couple of days now, seems like a really cool site, with a lot of good information.

My amp arrived today, looks like brand new, and works perfectly, I haven't got to use the Brake Lite yet, waiting for the cables I ordered. Hopefully with some tweaking, and settings help, from the tone sheet, I will achieve tonal Nirvana lol. Thanks everyone for the nice welcomes too. Glad I found this site, I love it already.

Welcome and congrats on a great amp choice. A Maz Jr NR 1x12 combo with a celestion blue was my first Z.

Welcome! The Maz Jr was my first Dr Z as well. I still have it, now lovingly encased in a Studio cab. I also encourage you to read the blogs for Dr Z's other amp offerings. It provides interesting reading for us amp geeks, and it will feed your GAS quite nicely.

Welcome to the forum. Not meaning to spend your Maz Money, but you can easily change the dynamic of this amp by changing out V1 with a good NOS 5751 or NOS 12AX7 as well as a good NOS 5Y3 rectifier (or speaker for a bit more $$). It is a plug and play amp so have a ton o fun with it! Welcome to the forum, and I will start looking for your new posts in a 6V6, 6L6, EL84, or KT88 based Z.

Ok, note to self, BLOCK "Z" Steve, before my bank account is completely depleted lol, Seriously though, I would like to warm the amp up a little bit, and I can't get her to break up as quickly as I'd like her to. My end goal is to use the amp, and no effects AT ALL, I love playing with just amp sounds. Haven't got to run her with the Brake Lite yet, I'm waiting for the cables to hook it up, then I will decide where to go from there. When I do decide on a configuration, I would appreciate any help and insight you could give me to achieve my end goal. Thanks EVERYONE for the nice welcomes, I really do appreciate them.

Agree, changing out tubes for NOS tubes does make a difference in tone. When I purchased my last Maz Jr here on the forum, I also received a spare preamp tube. After a while, I decided to check out the tube and found it to be a RCA 12ax7a. I put it into V1 and it made the amp sound richer, with more bandwidth, lows and highs. My bandmates noticed right away at the next practice without me saying anything.
Regarding breakup, see what happens with your brake lite as that may be enough volume reduction to allow you to get the amp into overdrive territory at reasonable volume levels. Heavy attenuation does change the feel of the amp and tone to some degree, but we all have different preferences and that my suit you fine.
Another consideration is the efficiency of your speakers. the 100db speakers are very efficient thus your amp will be louder than speakers at a 97 or 98 db efficiency. With a less efficient speaker your amp will be quieter and thus you can turn up the amp volumes to get into breakup territory. A less efficient speaker combined with the brake lite a couple of clicks down might do the trick. I was playing my Maz through a celestion gold and with a tele, really liked that combination. But the gold is a 100db very efficient speaker. I acquired a celestion G12M-65 creamback which is rated at 97db and really like it with my amps. The creamback is a ceramic speaker so cannot reproduce the alnico tones of the gold, but the CB is a great all around middle of the road spkr imo.
The brake lite and speaker efficiency should get you to where you want to be imo. But if not, another suggestion is to consider an EL-844 power tube by JJ. These tubes are designed to offer lower volume and less headroom. I have a pair of these and used them for a while in my Stangray in an attempt to control the volume of that 30 watt amp. I have not tried them in a Maz though. What I found with the EL-844 is that it seemed to retain the EL-84 tones just fine, but rather than really make a noticeable reduction in volume, it make a noticeable reduction in headroom, what you are trying to accomplish. Gets you into breakup very soon. What I realized after using the tubes for a few gigs is that I am the type of player that prefers more clean headroom. Probably due to being in cover bands and playing so many different songs and styles that I want the tonal flexibility. I like that headroom and then use pedals to get overdrive. Now the tubes just sit and I doubt that I will use them. If you get to this consideration and are interested in some, pm me and we can work out a deal. I forgot about them until this discussion about headroom.

Thank You z4m3, I really appreciate you taking the time to give me all that useful information, I will work with the brake lite, and see where it takes me. If it doesn't get me where I want to go, I will try some tube swapping, thank you for the link and information on what way I may need to go. Also I LOVE the Cream back speaker, played one in a Top Hat Club Royale, what a beautiful sound. Thanks for reminding me of that speaker. Very nice of you to offer your opinion and help, I REALLY do appreciate it.
